My TV Picks (November 8 - 19)

I am doing two weeks at a time in order to plan ahead.

Tuesday, Nov. 8, 8-9 p.m. CST (PBS) "The Last Abortion Clinic." Pro-life advocates have waged a successful campaign to reduce abortions in many places and created their own clinics to offer alternatives to women. The "Frontline" series investigates the steady decline in the number of physicians and clinics that perform abortions, and focuses on local political battles in states such as Mississippi, where there is only one clinic that performs the procedure.

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 8-9:30 p.m. CST (PBS) "The 2005 Mark Twain Prize." Steve Martin is honored at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, with guests Larry David, Martin Mull, Carl Reiner and Lily Tomlin.

Friday, Nov. 11, 9-10 p.m. CST (A&E) "Paul McCartney in St. Petersburg." Paul McCartney performs from Russia such songs as "Penny Lane," "Jet," "Flaming Pie," "I've Got a Feeling" and more.

Saturday, Nov. 12, 7-8:30 p.m. CST (EWTN) "Solanus Casey: Priest, Porter, Prophet." Documentary about Bernard Francis Casey (1870-1957), who was ordained as a simple priest in the Capuchin order, and though assigned the humble duties of sacristan and porter, soon manifested a gift of healing and prophecy, and was pronounced venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1995.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, 7-10 p.m. CST (TCM) "Marie Antoinette" (1938). Historical extravaganza follows the tribulations of the Austrian princess (Norma Shearer) in the court of Louis XV (John Barrymore), married to his dull-witted son (Robert Morley), their eventual succession to the throne and execution in the French Revolution. Director W.S. Van Dyke II alternates scenes of elaborate spectacle with sympathetic vignettes of the queen, her well-meaning but ineffectual husband Louis XVI and the queen's lifelong admirer (Tyrone Power), with the treacherous Duke of Orleans (Joseph Schildkraut) hastening their downfall. Long and stodgy but occasionally moving Hollywood rewrite of history, with plenty of court intrigues and revolutionary violence. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification of the theatrical version was A-II -- adults and adolescents. Not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America.

Various dates and times (PBS) "Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger: My Vatican." Filmed prior to his ascendancy as Pope Benedict XVI, the 45-minute documentary follows tour-guide (then) Cardinal Ratzinger as he provides a rare, firsthand glimpse into life at the Vatican, including its archives, museums and catacombs as well as various locations inaccessible to the public, many never before filmed. Check local listings.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, 7-8 p.m. CST (CBS) "I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash." The legendary singer will be celebrated in concert by artists who have been profoundly influenced by his unique style and songs: Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Kid Rock, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Lee Lewis and others, with Cash docudrama "Walk the Line" stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon among those introducing performances.

Saturday, Nov. 19, 7-8 p.m. EST (EWTN) "God Touches a Life: Catherine Laboure, Messenger of Mary Immaculate." Filmed at significant locations in her life, the story moves from her birth in 1806 to her death on the last day of 1876. St Catherine's sanctity is ascribed not to her visions of the Miraculous Medal, but to her service to the poor and her humility.
