Fidelis Sponosors Pro-Christmas, Pro-Alito Ads

A Catholic-based advocacy organization yesterday launched the first phase of an advertising campaign that criticizes the American Civil Liberties Union while affirming Judeo-Christian faith traditions and supporting the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito.

According to a statement from the group, Fidelis, the initial phase of the campaign is a Web-based commercial and advertisements, with a planned radio phase to follow.

"This season is a special time when many Americans commemorate our Judeo-Christian roots," said Fidelis President Joseph Cella. "So while we prepare for our celebrations and give thanks for our treasured religious freedom, we unfortunately have to prepare for those freedoms to be attacked by the ACLU and their allies. These same allies are fighting to topple the nomination of Judge Alito."

Continued Cella: "On one front of the war on religious freedom, we see liberal groups like People for the American Way and the Alliance for Justice willing to attack judicial nominees over their 'deeply held' Catholic and Christian beliefs. On the other front, we see it when seasonal displays reflecting America's Judeo-Christian heritage are attacked by the ACLU and others."

The group hopes to rebut some in the media who are asking how the addition of Alito, a Catholic, to the high court might affect the country by establishing a "Catholic majority" on the panel.

Said Cella: "We will provide a vigorous defense of Judge Alito who is being brought into the war on religious freedom by liberal groups who are out of touch with American values on religion."

The organization's new ad mentions how the ACLU had forced Jersey City, N.J., to remove a traditional holiday display in front of City Hall, but that Alito ruled against the law group and "the inclusive holiday display was restored."

The ad can be viewed on Fidelis' website.
