The Baptism of the Lord -- Updated

“ I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you a covenant to the people, a light to the nations to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.”

~ Isaiah 42: 6.7

This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the Baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to "fulfill all righteousness." Though pure, innocent, and without sin, Our Lord allowed John to baptize Him, not because He needed it, but because sinners need it. He is not purified through Baptism, but He purifies the waters of Baptism. Jesus' gesture is also a manifestation of his self-emptying. When He is baptized, his Divinity is manifested. He confirms the presence of the Holy Spirit at Baptism, as well as the presence of the Father and the Son. “The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation, and the Father revealed Jesus as his "beloved Son."

The Baptism of Christ represents the beginning of His Messianic mission. At this time, the promise of eternal life is made to all who are baptized. The Church baptizes babies as soon as possible after they are born to ensure the promise of eternal life. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI was baptized on the day he was born, April 16th. His mother brought him to the Easter Vigil Service on that day, which was Holy Saturday, to be baptized.

Pope John Paul has said that we should celebrate our baptism just as we celebrate our birthdays. For, this is the date commemorating the day that we are filled with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and admitted into the Eucharistic communion with others in the Catholic Church. Through the Holy Spirit, in Baptism we are purified, justified, and sanctified. This is the day when we begin our faith journey with the Lord and make the most important commitment in our lives. We take the first step in inheriting the kingdom of God. The vows taken for the infant at this time are based upon the faith of the parents.

Action: Renew your baptismal vows today.

As parents, we can renew the baptismal vows for our children,
to strengthen their faith, and also to assist in bringing those
who have strayed from their faith back “Home” again.

Quotes:

“The grace of the Son, and of His Father, and of the Spirit came to dwell in the baptismal water, such that when it touched those baptized later following His example, it would be divinely regenerated, and mystically renewed and recreated in such a way that they would no longer be from the Old Adam and so attract the curse. Instead they would be born of the New Adam and so have God’s blessing, not being children of the flesh, but God’s children, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God through Jesus Christ (John 1:13).”

~ St. Gregory Palamas

"Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children.”

~ Acts 2:38–39

"It is this one Spirit who makes it possible for an infant to be regenerated . . . when that infant is brought to baptism; and it is through this one Spirit that the infant so presented is reborn. For it is not written, ‘Unless a man be born again by the will of his parents’ or ‘by the faith of those presenting him or ministering to him,’ but, ‘Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit.’ The water, therefore, manifesting exteriorly the sacrament of grace, and the Spirit effecting interiorly the benefit of grace, both regenerate in one Christ that man who was generated in Adam."

~ St. Augustine (Letters 98:2 [A.D. 412]).

Renewal of Baptismal Vows

I renew my baptismal vows, I renounce Satan and all his works and all his vanities, I take Jesus Christ for my Model and my Guide and I promise to be faithful to Him unto the end of my life. Amen.

This evening, during Mass, a young girl of about 4 or 5 was baptized. I don't know how much she understood about the sacrament of Baptism, but I could see the joy and the peace on her face. She was radiant! I am sure this is a day that she will remember for the rest of her life. Praised be Jesus Christ!

It was absolutely wonderful to be able to renew my Baptismal vows again and experience that wonderful peace that comes in the process of surrendering my heart to the Lord.
