Groups Submit Petitions Calling for a Grand Jury to Investigate Abortion Death

April 09, 2006

Wichita, KS – A grassroots coalition delivered petitions to the District Court in Sedgwick County, Kansas, yesterday, asking for a Grand Jury to convene to investigate abortionist George R. Tiller in the death of Christin Gilbert last year. The group turned in 7,742 signatures, over three times the number required by law, after a short ceremony under rainy skies at the Sedgwick County Court House. Along with the petitions, the group submitted a packet of documentation for the consideration of the Grand Jury.

During the ceremony, two women injured by abortion told of their support for the Grand Jury investigation. One of the women, Linda Cramer, told of her horrific botched abortion experience at the hands of Tiller, and how Tiller employees intimidated her through calls and e-mails last year as she was about to testify before a State Senate committee about the need for clinic regulations.

Although this event was the first story related to the third-trimester abortion death of Christin Gilbert to be covered by all the local media, none mentioned Cramer’s remarks.

The gathering of about 75 supporters also were shown a 7 minute video presentation about Gilbert’s life and the need for the Grand Jury investigation, which was played on Operation Rescue’s new Video Truth Truck, on a large screen the size of the entire back panel of the truck.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman presented a statement of support from one of Christin Gilbert’s extended family members who is backing the petition drive.

The District Court will now deliver the petitions to the election commission, which will verify the signatures. Once verified, the Grand Jury will be convened and the District Attorney will appoint a prosecutor. It will have three months to conduct its investigation and determine if indictments will be issued.

“All we are asking for is an impartial investigation into the death of Christin Gilbert by people not associated with George Tiller professionally, politically, or socially,” said Newman. “The so-called investigation by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts that supposedly ‘cleared’ him was so tainted by cronyism and the appearance of impropriety that it is hard for honest people to take it seriously.”

KSBHA Director Larry Buening and his wife, Vicki, are both political appointees of pro-abortion Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who has received large campaign contributions from Tiller.

Grand Jury efforts convened through the petition process have recently been successful in Kansas. One such effort calling for an investigation into pornography businesses netted an indictment last year.

Organizations that worked with the Justice for Christin Coalition were the Kansas Coalition for Life, Kansans For Life, and Operation Rescue.

Christina at Real Choice asks the Wichita Eagle why the reporting on the investigation into Christin's death has been so lackluster and void of asking the the obvious questions. I think we can all guess the answer.
