Catholic Pro-Life Campaign Targets Supreme Court, Partial-Birth Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Supreme Court began its next term today and it will almost immediately be focused on abortion issues. As it considers whether or not to uphold a Congressional ban on the gruesome partial-birth abortion procedure, the nation's Catholic bishops are launching an extensive advertising campaign.

The high court begins its session by considering whether or not to take a case to overturn the Doe v. Bolton decision that was the companion to Roe v. Wade.

While the high court appears unlikely to accept that case, it has already scheduled hearings on the national partial-birth abortion ban for November 8.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, seeking to raise public awareness of the issue, has planned a five week educational campaign through its Second Look Project, which focuses on disabusing Americans of some commonly held misconceptions about abortion.

“Six years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court invoked its Roe v. Wade decision to strike down state laws against partial-birth abortion,” said Deirdre McQuade of the USCCB pro-life office.

“Now that the court is taking a second look at the horrendous practice of partial-birth abortion, this new campaign will help remind the public and our elected officials how much is at stake," McQuade said.

In a statement provided to LifeNews.com, she said the campaign begins today and will involve sending a fact or quote on partial-birth abortion each weekday to Congress, news media, and opinion leaders, ending November 8 when oral arguments are scheduled.

Building on the Project’s “Roe Reality Check” postcard campaign of 2005, which educated Congress and others on critical facts regarding the Roe v. Wade abortion decision, the new Supreme Court Countdown campaign will send 27 “e-cards” by e-mail.

While abortion has been legal in the U.S. for three decades, polls continue to show that many people do not have very basic information about abortion, such as when during pregnancy it is legal, or why it is generally performed.

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest. Following his ordination, he left for Belgium in order to found a new abbey on his own estate of Brogne.
