Pro-Life Advocates Stand Against Abortion in Thousands of Life Chains
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates across the country stood together in a silent witness for life in the annual Life Chain. With signs driving home the message that abortion hurts women and kills children, the pro-life people lined the sidewalks along busy streets in large cities and small towns from one coast to the other.
In Decatur, Illinois, Dale Boulier said it was time to take a stand and educate fellow residents of this Midwestern city. It was the first time he had participated.
"It's something I believe in, and I've always intended to come before, but, for whatever reason, never made it," he said. "I think you've got to get up and make an argument for what you believe in."
"I think people are taking notice of us," Theresa Lyons added. "It's an unpleasant issue, and people tend to put unpleasant things out of their mind but, when they see us out here, we're raising their awareness."
Marcos Ugarte, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, also participated as well as his wife and six children. He gave up a day of watching football to tell others abortion is wrong.
"There's other things we could be doing than standing in Gettysburg square," Ugarte said. "The Ravens are playing the Chargers today. But it's a nice thing we can do. We're here to show our support for life."
The event is marked by the participation of pastors, lawmakers and college and high school students and life chains in Indiana were no exception.
"This is a prayerful witness; all of us need to be respected," Rev. Tom Jackson said of his participation.
Republican state representative candidate Connie Basham has stood with others at Life Chains for several years.
"Abortion is not only a religious issue," she said. "It's true that a child deserves the right to live. We're just taking a sunny Sunday afternoon to share that witness."
Betty Hogg, of Wicomico County Right to Life in Maryland also decided to spend part of her day speaking for the voiceless and hopes women considering an abortion will change their minds after seeing the pro-life signs.
"We're praying God will touch hearts," she said. "We are not out to be mean to anybody. I have someone very near and dear to me that went through an abortion and we're not against anybody who went through an abortion. We're just hoping to show them a better way."

We had a good turn out here, and I was pleasantly surprised to see all the people who drove past give a thumbs up sign, honking and waving in approval of the pro-life message. In our area, only two people showed their disapproval -- one with a thumb down and the other manifesting his low IQ by sticking his head out the window of his vehicle and yelling a plethora of obscene words. It was sunny, with a nice breeze, and 94 degrees, but the crowd -- which consisted of people of ages and faiths -- stood and prayed, holding up their signs for a good ninety minutes. It was a wonderful peaceful, prayerful witness.
