Embryonic Stem Cell Research Passes Today: Reactions to this Tragedy

H.R. 3 (The EMBRYONIC Stem Cell Research Funding Bill) was passed today in the House of Representatives by a vote of 253-174 but not with enough support to override a veto by President Bush.

The use of human embryos for their stem cells is unethical and crosses a moral line.

Embryonic stem cells have yet to cure one person – yet adult stem cells have had 1229 clinical trials including 614 that are currently recruiting patients. Now with the discovery stem cells in amniotic fluid there is NO reason for EMBRYONIC stem cell research.

In order to claim a cause to save lives, you first must save lives in the beginning of life. We must protect life at every stage of life, including embryos. "It is not necessary to sacrifice the life of embryos to obtain cells that could become embryonic stem cell lines," said Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md). "It is wrong to use federal taxpayer dollars for research which offends the morals and ethics of millions of Americans."

This bill will now go to the U.S. Senate for discussion and vote.

Bill Donahue, President of Catholic League's reaction:

The Democrats Haven't Changed

“In 1993, within 48 hours of being sworn in as president of the United States, Bill Clinton issued five pro-abortion pronouncements, including a repeal of the ban on abortion counseling at federally funded clinics. It took the House Democrats less than 100 hours this year to voice its support for killing embryos. In other words, despite all the talk about God and respect for human life, the Democrats haven’t changed their stripes. Rhetoric is cheap; voting records are what matters.”

Wendy Wright, Concerned Women of America's Reaction:

“Today’s vote by the U.S. House of Representatives to spend tax dollars on destroying human embryos does not give hope that this Congress will end wasteful and immoral spending."

“Allowing unethical research that kills small human beings is apparently not enough for some. They insist that all Americans must be complicit by paying for it, even though superior alternatives – which are ethical and effective – not only exist but are already treating patients. Since ethical alternatives exist, this bill is about playing politics, not helping patients."

My reaction: Disgraceful! But what can do expect when we vote for Democrats and cafeteria Catholics? Voters seem to have an awfully short memory when it comes to remembering exactly who supports the culture of death in this country.
