Edwards’ Second Blogger Resigns (Updated)

Fidelis to Launch Ad Campaign

WASHINGTON D.C. – The national Catholic-based advocacy group Fidelis applauded the breaking news Tuesday evening of the resignation of Melissa McEwan from the John Edwards presidential campaign committee.

The announcement of McEwan’s resignation came less than one day after his official blogger, Amanda Marcotte, stepped down after it was revealed that both Marcotte and McEwan had leveled profane and vulgar attacks against God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Benedict XVI, and all conservative Christians on their personal blogs.

Fidelis President Joseph Cella stated: “We welcome the news that both bloggers have now left the John Edwards campaign. However, we remain deeply disturbed that the bloggers left on their own accord without any prodding from Edwards. By refusing to act against these bigoted bloggers, Edwards signaled either his support of their writings or his cowardice by refusing to act against them.”

In her blog post announcing the decision to resign, McEwan emphasized that she stepped down with the ‘reluctant support’ of the Edwards campaign. She argued that ‘my remaining the focus of sustained ideological attacks was inevitably making me a liability to the campaign, and making me increasingly uncomfortable with my and my family's level of exposure.’

Cella said: “This whole episode calls into question whether Edwards has the decisiveness and moral courage to lead our country.”

Fidelis has written to Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton calling on them to condemn the writings of the bloggers. Both Senators have yet to publicly respond.

“The fact that John Edwards gave his ‘reluctant support’ to McEwan’s resignation makes one wonder does he really care about hateful attacks against Catholics and Christians? It also makes one wonder whether the Left actually has a double standard that permits such mean spirited bigotry against Catholics and Christians,” Cella said.

Fidelis is developing an ad campaign that will run on this issue in select markets.

My Comments:

In my opinion, this whole incident suggests to me that John Edwards is a gutless and spineless leader, unable to fire two obvious troublemakers on his staff. But I wonder why he hired them in the first place? Did he not first do some kind of background check on them? If you apply for a janitorial job at Wal*Mart or Target they do a background check on you before you're even considered for a position. In this instance, however, we're talking about someone whose Presidential campaign is on the line - someone whose entire future is at stake here, which is dependent on the vile behavior of two potty-mouthed, blasphemous Catholic bigots. If most of us were in his shoes, we would take immediate action to remove the "thorns in our side," realizing that they were obstacles to achieving our goals, recognizing that they were not the quality of people we would want representing us.

What kind of leadership skills does Edwards display by his actions in this particular situation?

1. Poor decision-making in hiring these employees in the first place. (lack of prudence)

2. Inadequate follow-up and review of their progress. (lack of wisdom)

3. Weak character in not having the courage to fire employees who are obviously inappropriate for the job. (lack of fortitude)

On the other hand, did he intentionally hire them because of their hatred towards Catholics? Perhaps he even approves of their use blasphemous, hate-filled language to describe what is sacred and holy to those of the Catholic faith.

It is possible that Edwards has internalized these same views himself and these (ex)employees were simply expressing what he himself as a presidential candidate could not say? It certainly makes one wonder who John Edwards really is. Certainly not someone we would want to see in the White House or in any other position of authority.
