Fidelis Calls on Obama, Clinton To Condemn Edwards’ Bigoted Bloggers

Formal Letters Sent Requesting Public Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The national Catholic-based advocacy group Fidelis has sent formal letters to Democratic presidential candidates Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama calling on them to publicly condemn the anti-Catholic and anti-Christian blog posts of Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan, who serve as the official bloggers for the John Edwards for President Committee.

Fidelis President Joseph Cella stated: “Senators Clinton and Obama must publicly condemn the hateful writings of these bloggers and call for their dismissal. Anything less than a clear public condemnation would significantly call into question their efforts to reach out to religious voters, many of whom have felt alienated by the Democratic Party in recent years.”

In the letters, Cella wrote: “You are in a unique position to make clear that anti-Catholic and anti-Christian bigotry of any kind should not be tolerated by any candidate. By taking up this issue publicly, you will be able to distinguish your candidacy from Mr. Edwards, while acknowledging the respect due people of faith in America, and in particular, Catholics and Christians.

Edwards announced he would not dismiss the bloggers and wanted to give them a “fair shake,” while Marcotte and McEwan characterized their own writings as satire that was not intended to offend.

“It is critical that Senators Clinton and Obama speak out on this issue to assure Catholics and other Christians that anti-Catholic bigotry has no place in the campaign for the presidency. We think it is important for both Senators to distinguish themselves from former Senator Edwards by describing how they would handle the identical situation involving one of their campaign staffers,” Cella commented.

Fidelis and other groups are preparing to launch a nationwide campaign against Edwards and his bloggers in the coming days.

Cella added: “The 2008 presidential cycle is going to be extremely divisive on both sides of the aisle, but this situation presents an excellent opportunity for candidates to repudiate any form of anti-Catholic and anti-Christian bigotry. For the sake of millions of Catholics in America who are outraged by this incident, surely this is not too much to ask.”

It will be interesting to see both their reactions to this. They both like to pretend they are Christians, so we shall see if they continue with their play-acting or if they just ignore it.
