Portugal's parliament votes to legalize abortion

Portugal's parliament voted overwhelmingly to legalize abortion up until the 10th week of pregnancy. Now this small Roman Catholic country can "keep up with the times" just like the rest of its European neighbors. This is devastating news. Many of us have been praying for Portugal and for the leaders of nations to protect and safeguard innocent lives. We might be asking ourselves, "How could God have allowed this to happen?" or "Why is God punishing his people?"

God gives us free will and apparently some of our leaders are exercising their free will to the fullest extent. Some consider themselves even above God and his laws. We need to pray and fast for the conversion of our wayard leaders who do not respect human life, but treat it as if it were garbage. These leaders exist not only in Portugal, but throughout the world. They are like vipers - full of the poisionous venom of their power and corruption - a disease which spreads throughout their countries and destroys their country's values and morals. This is the beginning of the destruction and the downfall of society. Unless we all repent, we will soon see the total destruction and decay of families and family life.

As Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta has stated on more than one occasion: "Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion."

I predict that we will see more and more violence in the world unless we all emerge from the shell of our comfort zones to pray and fast and become pro-active in the movement to end abortion and to promote the culture of life. We need to stop looking to others for answers or examples - we know the truth and must live it out in our lives. When we face God at the Last Judgement, he will not ask what our Bishops or clergy or the next door neighbor did - he is only interested in what we did to stop the killing of innocent human beings. This Lent is the time to look into our hearts and souls to examine our pro-life conscience and determine what we can do to save our fellow human beings from a barbarious death.

  1. Jean,

I am going to double my efforts at fasting and prayer this Lent for an end to abortion. The slaughter of our innocent unborn must stop - we must do all in our power to put an end to this holocaust.

Thanks for your excellent post and for all your pro-life work.

  2. It is so sad that this small holy Catholic country has chosen sin over their love and commitment to Our Blessed Mother and their promises to her. Our Lady must be shedding many tears over this tragedy.

We must persevere in praying the rosary for an end to abortion and continue our First Saturday devotions.
