SUPPORT ARCHBISHOP BURKE

Jay Anderson posted a story on April 30 about Archbishop Burke from St. Louis being mocked by Bob Costas and Billy Crystal at a "Catholic" fundraising event held on church grounds for his pro-life stance. This irreverent, sinful, and sick behavior disgusts me to the max. No one has the right to engage in this sort of disrepectful language and mocking behavior toward another person, much less someone of Archbishop Burke's stature. I thought of Jesus being spit upon and mocked by the soldiers before they crucified him when I read about this.

Now Pro-life Blogs reports on this event as well and offers some good action advice for all of us. Here are the details:

Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke did not attend a fundraiser headlined by singer Sheryl Crow because he disagrees with her support of abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research.

But his name sure came up just the same.

At the fundraiser Saturday for the Bob Costas Cancer Center at Cardinal Glennon Medical Center, Costas joked that Crow was appearing for three reasons: to help children, put on a good show and "get me excommunicated."

Comedian Billy Crystal said of the archbishop, "I respect his right to choose - his right to choose not to be here."

Crystal added, "After all, charity begins at home because that's where he is."

Burke resigned last week from the board of the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center Foundation because Crow was providing entertainment at the annual fundraiser and concert.
Costas said before the event he respected Burke's position, but disagreed with it.

Crow has not commented directly on the matter, but the Missouri native joked that her dad was at the show in case there was trouble. Audience members gave her a standing ovation, and she thanked them for their support...

Thank the Lord that the Archbishop cares more for the approval of God than he does the likes of Crow, Crystal or Costas.

And if you'd like to tell the Archbishop that you're on his side too, please write him at the Chancery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis (4445 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63108) or call 314-633-2222 or use this page to zip along an e-mail.

As I stated in my original post covering this topic, I am proud of Archbishop Burke for his courage in standing up for the faith and for human life. He is a wonderful model for all of us to emulate. These individuals who mocked him and insisted on having a pro-abort at a Catholic function will be held accountable for their behavior one day. I hope and pray that they repent before that day approaches. Archbishop Burke is definitely a "white martyr" for the faith.

  1. Crow giving her time and talent to this cause is no more an endorsement of abortion by Glennon Hospital than Burke is endorsing racism by being on the Board of an institution named for his segregationist precedessor.

The truth is that the late cardinal O'Connor of New York, whose pro-life bona fides were clear, invited pro-choicers like Jeanne Kilpatrick and Ed Koch to assist with Catholic fundraising. Maybe the rules are different if you are pro-choice and a neo-con.

  2. Good on, Archbishop Burke!! The pro-life, pro-abortion isssue is coming down to the line more than ever, especially with elections looming, it calls for strong, unequivocal stances...I mean, would these same *celebrities* have attended an event in the 60's if a pro-slavery entertainer would be performing? I don't think so....
