Fighting the False Opinions of Pro-aborts with Love

As Christians, all of us are weary of the deception of the culture of death in our world today - the lies and the horrible consequences of those lies - immodest dress and behavior, sexual relationships outside of marriage, sexual promiscuity, adultery, contraception, abortion, same sex relationships, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning. But what can we do about it? What has been most successful in changing our culture?

St. John of Kanty, a professor of Scripture at the University of Krakow said, "Fight all false opinions, but let your weapons be patience, sweetness, and love. Roughness is bad for your own soul and spoils the best cause."

St. John of Kanty, a university professor turned priest, lived a life of poverty and humility and gave the money he saved to the poor. He genuinely loved people and they could not help but love him. He effectively utilized the virtues of love, sweetness, and patience to conquer deception. This is needed so much in our world today, especially in the pro-life movement. 'Won By Love' is a wonderful book written by Norma McCorvey (AKA Jane Roe in Roe vs. Wade), in which she describes in detail how the love of the pro-life workers won her heart and soul for Christ.

Norma Mc Corvey was a pregnant 21-year-old woman with only a 10th grade education - too poor to get an illegal abortion in Texas, or a legal one in California. In 1969, at the age of twenty-two, she was introduced to two lawyers from Texas, Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee who were both looking to overturn the Texas statute which outlawed abortion. They approached the pregnant Norma and convinced her to sign on the dotted line making her the plaintiff in an abortion suit against the State of Texas. This case later evolved into the infamous Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion in this country. The surprising part of it is that Norma never had an abortion, but gave birth to her daughter.

Norma experienced deep depression from the part she played in the pro-abortion movement. She felt responsible for all the babies who were being murdered as a result of her misguided actions. After over 28 years of guilt induced drug and alcohol binges and suicide attempts, involvement in a lesbian relationship, and working at various jobs in abortion clinics in an attempt to justify her involvement in the legalization of abortion, Norma McCorvey did the unthinkable. She turned back to God.

Norma's road to conversion started in 1995 when the pro-life group, Operation Rescue, moved in next door to the abortion clinic where she was working at the time. A little girl's affection, a mother's trust, and a gregarious man's friendship surprised Norma, and eventually led her to consider the love, forgiveness, and hope offered by Jesus Christ.

Norma's conversion shocked the world. The photograph of her baptism made headlines in international newspapers. "The poster child for abortion just jumped off the poster," one pro-lifer said, "and into the arms of Jesus Christ."

In her book, Won By Love, Norma attributed her conversion to the unconditional and profound love and forgiveness of those Christians in her life who saw Christ in her and treated her accordingly - as one of His children - who was poor and in need of genuine friendship, love, forgiveness, healing, and hope.

Feeling a need to share the truth with others, Norma founded Roe No More Ministry in 1997 with the mission of exposing the lie that is Roe v. Wade. In January 2004, Norma renamed Roe No More Ministry to Crossing Over Ministry. She explained the reason for the name change in this way: "Crossing Over" is an indication that my life's work is better defined not just by my past involvement in Roe v. Wade, but more generally about our constant struggle to better ourselves in Christ; that is, our constant crossing over."

Norma’s faith journey eventually led her home to the Roman Catholic Church. In 1998, she was confirmed a Catholic by Fr. Edward Robinson, O.P. of St. Albert’s Priory in Dallas and Fr. Frank Pavone, the International Director of Priests for Life.

If each one of us would manifest the love of Christ toward just one other individual through friendship, kind words and generosity, think how many people trapped in the culture of death we could win over to the freedom and the truth of the culture of life.
