  1. It was only about 15-20 years ago the fundies started complaining about Halloween. Thereby trying to completely wreck what was always a "dress up as a fantasy character or maybe what you'd like to be when you grow up" and go around the neighborhood and get candy fun little holiday. It really annoys me that grownups seem to have co-opted this fun treat. Halloween shouldn't be taken any more seriously than if a kid puts a tin helmet on his head and declares himself "rocket man."

too many adults spoil the fun. And don't BUY a costume, MAKE ONE.

  2. When I was growing up in a family of 7, we were too poor to be able to afford costumes, but were overjoyed to get new masks each year. We generally wore our coats at that time of year, so it never really mattered what you wore underneath them.

I was more excited about the homemade angel costumes that we wore in the Christmas procession at Midnight Mass. My mom made them out of old sheets along with the golden halos. Now that was something worth being excited about!

  3. We enjoy Halloween. My kids have a lot of fun figuring out what they will be and how they will put together the costume (we try to "do it ourselves" with thrift shop stuff or things we already own in most cases.) Half the fun is in the planning. The rest, of course, is the candy :)
I have a rule that they must live by: nothing scary, gory, sexy, rude or crude. And no "hobos." BORING!
I read somewhere about claiming back the day by making it family time instead of honoring the evil stuff that only gives the day to the devil.
