A Child's Perspective on Abortion

Editor's note. The following was sent to National Right to Life by Bridget Musolino. It so delighted us that we asked permission to share it with you. Please share your thoughts at daveandrusko@hotmail.com.

Hi, I recently did an "interview" with my 7-year-old daughter, Noelle, at the request of my aunt who works at the Life Center in NY. Noelle recently decided to have her birthday guests bring a donation for the Life Center rather than bring a gift to her party and so my aunt wanted me to interview her for the Life Center's newsletter. I thought you might find a child's perspective on abortion very interesting. It's very clear cut to her that abortion is wrong.

Take care and God bless you in your pro-life work.

Noelle, let's start by telling me a little about yourself. What grade are you in?

Second.

Who is your best friend?

Kathleen and Hallie.

What makes you a good friend?

I don't tattle.

What is your favorite show?

Zach and Cody.

What is your favorite book?

I like the Magic Tree House books.

What is your favorite place to visit?

The beach and New York because we have family there.

What do you love most about having a family?

I love that we can watch movies together and that I can play with Jude, Zelie, and Marissa [her siblings].

What do you like about being the oldest?

I like going to school first and I like getting my nails polished.

What's your favorite thing to do?

Make up stories and draw pictures and read.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A writer.

What does it mean to be a Christian?

It means to believe in Jesus and to know prayers ... to love God and to go to church.

How can we be more like Jesus?

We could help people and be nice to people even if we don't like them.

What are some ways that you help others?

I fold clothes and talk to Marissa [her baby sister]. I'd like to help Jude with his Math.

What do you think is the biggest problem in our world?

People not believing in God and people being mean to each other.

What made you want to give money to the Life Center in place of your birthday gifts?

I don't like abortion, and I like babies ... like Marissa.

Do you understand what abortion is?

Yes, it's when people kill babies.

Why do you think people have abortions?

Because they don't want to do work and take care of them or they wanted a boy instead of a girl.

Some moms don't understand that it's a baby. People tell them it's not a baby yet until the baby's born. What would you tell those people?

I would tell them that it is a baby in their belly, but if they still don't want the baby they could wait until they're done [with the pregnancy] and then give the baby to someone who would want it.

There are a lot of smart adults in the world who think abortion is okay. Adults who are in charge of our country and who make our laws and who we elect as our country's leaders. They say that a woman should have a choice to have an abortion and they call themselves "pro-choice." What would you say to these adults?

Every woman should have to make the decision before and ask God before they have a baby to not have a baby if they don't want to. But if they don't get their wish, they should go through with it and ask God for not too much pain.

Do you know what the Life Center does?

It takes care of babies because it makes sure that they don't get killed.

How do you hope the Life Center will use the money you donate?

I hope they'll use it to pay for bottles for the babies if the mommies can't afford them.

You're a pretty creative kid Noelle. Can you think of an invention that you could make that would help people to know that an unborn baby is a baby?

I would make a thing that looks like a mirror and if the woman walked in front of it, she could see through her belly to the baby inside. Even if the baby's very small, she could see it.

Wouldn't that be a great invention! Thank you Noelle for your very open and honest answers. You make your mother very proud.

  1. I have many beautiful friends at the Life Center, and was fortunate to attend their Dinner Dance with Fr. Pavone this October. What a lovely young lady Noelle is! Her family is doing a fine job raising her.
