1582 Pope Gregory XIII (1502–1585) implemented the Gregorian calendar. In Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain, October 4 of this year was followed directly by October 15.

1701 - Marie-Marguerite d'Youville, Canadian saint. She founded the Grey Nuns or Sisters of Charity and was the first Canadian-born person to be elevated to sainthood. (d. 23 December 1771).

1836 - James Tissot, French artist. The chief labor of his career was the production of a series of 700 water-color drawings to illustrate the life of Christ and the Old Testament. (d. 1902)
