Phill Kline loses DA race

From the Newton Kansan: Topeka — Phill Kline gained national attention and the loyalty of many abortion foes by investigating clinics, but his reputation will cost him his job as the district attorney in Kansas’ most populous county.

Kline lost the Republican primary Tuesday in Johnson County to Steve Howe, a former assistant district attorney.

Howe won 60 percent of the vote and will face Democrat Rick Guinn, another former assistant DA who now is working in the attorney general’s office.

Howe’s main pitch to voters was that the district attorney’s office needs a professional prosecutor, not a politician — a less-than-subtle reference to Kline’s reputation as a passionate anti-abortion Republican.

“I think that truly has hit home to the people of Johnson County,” Howe said of his message. “I think that the thing people were troubled with was: Were decisions being made because of special interests or were decisions made based on the law and the evidence?”

From the Lawrence Journal World: Kline has sought to convince voters that he cares about far more than abortion and has done a good job of prosecuting criminals. But his opposition to abortion and his investigation of the Planned Parenthood clinic were important to some voters who supported him.

“He’s right on that issue,” said Nancy Turville, a Prairie Village real estate agent. “That’s the main reason I voted for him.”

But some Republicans had wondered whether Kline could win a general election contest against Guinn because of his reputation. In 2006, Kline received 35 percent of the vote in Johnson County when he ran for re-election as attorney general.

“I don’t like Kline,” said Eugene Mira, a retired factory manger from Prairie Village who is a Democrat. “I just don’t like him for the things he’s done. He seems to be fighting the abortion issue more than anything else.”

From Jill Stanek: At times like this my tribe will recite this reminder:God is good all the time; all the time God is good.

Yesterday Phill Kline lost his primary bid to become the Republican nominee for Johnson County District Attorney.

I was around when Phill was making his decision whether or not to run in a election where it was obvious pro-abort, liberal, and media long knives would be out to get him.

Phill ultimately decided to run because it was the right thing to do, the right example to set. It was to run the entire course of this race in his life, philosophically speaking.

The Bible clearly teaches God controls world events. God either allows or causes the rise and fall of every kingdom and ruler, large and small, for His purposes. Sometimes we don't understand. But it's all for good.

In one sense I feel relief for Phill. The pressure upon him has been greater than most could bear. Now it is off. Now God has authorized him to move on. One of my favorite verses is John 17:4. In fact, I'd like it on my tombstone should I finish my long race in good standing:I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

Phill has done that.

My Comments: To those of us who know him, Phill Kline is a true winner and a pro-life hero. He may not have won this election, but I would love to see him run as Governor for KS, replacing the retiring Kathleen Sebelius. Another great option for him would be to run for Senator. The Lord may be closing one door for him, but I believe he is opening up another.
