Tropic Thunder: A Film to Boycott

Tim Shriver interview on Fox News about Tropic Thunder

Why boycott this film?

It contains damaging and hurtful hate speech that can cause harm, both emotionally and by giving insensitive individuals new ways to taunt children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

  1. As I said on my blog, I agree that using the word "retard" or "retarded" in conversation or to taunt others is wrong.

However, I'd much rather see the efforts and coverage given to this film go to preventing the abortion of disabled children. 90% of kids diagnosed with Downs while in-utero are aborted, and mothers with abnormal pre-natal test results report tremendous pressure to abort.

I think the culture's insensitivity to persons with disabilities stems directly from the fact most in our culture think it's okay to abort a disabled child, or euthanize a disabled adult.

  2. Amy,I agree with the premise that aboriton lowers our value on the disabled.
This protest is at it's heart, pro-life. I know the woman who started all the protests, Gail Williamson of the Down Syndrome Assoc. of LA. Gail always says that the reason media is important is that when a pregnant lady gets the diagnosis of Down syndrome from her doctor, he used to be able to say, "Your child will be like Corky in 'Life Goes On'" (hit TV show in 90's Corky had DS)SHe is always trying to get roles for people with DS in the media for this reason.
If there are no readily avaialble role models in the media or highly negative stereotypes, she believes that women will be more easily scared by the list of symptoms they are recited, and have no positive images to fix upon to give them hope. So they abort.

I'm in the middle of compiling a book about Catholic mothers of special needs babies, and how God helped them through the difficult times. I believe that the power of positive examples can save lives.
It's been said that politics is downstream from culture.
Like it or not, Hollywood is our main cultural outlet.
That's why Jean and I promoted the prolife film "Bella", the film's message saved 16 babies, am I right, Jean? I heard that from the film's producer Leo Severino last March for Life, I think more may have been saved since then.

  3. Well said, Leticia. Sixteen was the last count I heard -- although I wouldn't be surprised if it is higher than that now.

  5. I am glad others think the same way. I have friends who say, "it's only a movie" or "it's entertainment and that is it". While they are movies and they are meant to be entertaining we also need to be alot more careful what we expose ourselves to. Junk in, junk out.
