VP Debate: Palin Wins!
VP Candidates Spar on Foreign Policy, Economy
Sarah Palin accused the Democratic ticket of waving a "white flag of surrender in Iraq," while Joe Biden accused John McCain of being wrong on war policy from the beginning, as the vice presidential candidates faced off for their only debate in St. Louis Thursday night. (Fox News)

My Thoughts:
I watched the entire debate between Palin and Biden tonight and here are my impressions:
1. I was impressed that neither one of them made any errors in their presentation. Biden managed to control his speech and Palin did not come across as being unprepared.
2. Both did well in backing up their Presidential candidates -- Biden shared Obama's lies; Sarah shared the truth about McCain.
3. Sarah Palin seemed a little nervous initially, but held her own. She gained confidence as the debate went on and took command. She came across as very intelligent and knowledgeable.
Sarah was positive, energetic, and sounded fresh when she spoke (unlike your typical politician.) She was feisty, forceful, and candid -- she spoke out when she disagreed on an issue or when Biden said something that was simply not true, and she told the moderator that she would not be answering the question the way it was asked, but in her own way.
I enjoyed Sarah's informality and friendly, personal way of relating to the voters. She seemed like a friend or my next door neighbor and not some politician making empty promises. I was more convinced that she really understood what the middle class American was actually experiencing than was Joe Biden. I connected with her on a human level more than I did Joe Biden -- she seemed so much more sincere and authentic.
4. With 35 years of experience under his belt, Biden was confident throughout the debate, but appeared lethargic and humorless. When he spoke it seemed as if he were speaking on the senate floor, sparring with the good ole boys. For the most part, he seemed sincere However, I believe he is very skilled at deceiving people and has had much practice at covering up his deceptions.
With a few exceptions, Biden spoke in an impersonal manner to his audience. He did exhibit strong hand gestures and looked straight into the camera when he spoke. however, it was difficult for me to relate to him --to the things he said and the fact that he was defending Obama so strongly - even the mention of that name brings into my mind the worst connotations imaginable. (infanticide, abortion, his innumerable lies, his money-making deals with Fannie Mae, as well as with criminals, terrorists, and the list goes on.)
I had hoped they would discuss more human life issues -- which are what matter most in this upcoming election --but the only thing mentioned in this area was same sex marriage.
Overall, I would say it was no contest -- Sarah ("Barracuda") Palin won!

Meh. Relatability means nothing to me. I don't need to relate to a politician. I don't want a politician to be just like me. I want them to be better than me, smarter than me, more compassionate than me.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Governor Palin seems just like a next door neighbour. That is what worries me.
I thought Governor Palin did quite well. She was personable and highly supportive of Senator McCain. As the debate proceeded, however, her lack of experience was self-evident. And in a crisis, I would opt for Senator Biden. In a crisis, folksiness does not have as much value for me as actual experience.

I agree, Palin did very well. I thought Biden was a condescending and pompous asp. I was completely revolted when he talked about himself in the third person.
