Denver, Colo.- A Catholic women’s group will meet in Washington D.C. to hear a bioethics panel and to meet with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The event, “New Springtime for Women,” will be held on Saturday, April 25 at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. It is co-sponsored by the women’s group ENDOW, whose name stands for Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women.

The gathering will feature a panel presentation on “Biotechnology and the Human Person,” including panelists Marilyn Coors, Ph.D., associate professor at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado, Denver; and Patrick Lee, Ph.D., a bioethics professor and director of the Institute of Bioethics at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

A mother-daughter event on April 24 will give teenagers and their mothers and grandmothers the opportunity to tour the Supreme Court and have a private meeting with Justice Alito. Click here for the full article.

  1. Below are three things you can do to help educate and provide transparency to the public about the dangers and bioethical concerns in human embryonic stem cell research:

#1: Mandate that stringent regulations be placed on the hESC industry, regulations that also provide transparency to the public. In June 2009 the NIH will publish hESC guidelines for research. They will be open to public comment. Post a public comment and demand that the hESC community have regulations and oversight that are not “self-policing”. Self-policing guidelines have allowed the scientific community to hide unethical or unsafe practices for way too long. This is extremely important. Make an effort to comment on the NIH guidelines in June and demand public transparency with stringent regulations and oversight on hESC research.

#2 Demand strong whistleblower protections for physicians and scientists. Scientists and physicians have been terminated or blacklisted after raising bioethical or safety complaints relating to stem cell research. They have no legal recourse. Therefore many scientists are afraid to speak out. The public is not served when scientists have no freedom of speech.

#3 Sponsor community programs or debates providing scientific, safety and bioethical perspectives on human embryonic stem cell research. Educating the public by relying on mainstream media, which has strong financial ties to the research industry, is a losing battle.
