Carlson Installed as New Archbishop of St. Louis

Archbishop Robert Carlson, an experienced bishop who calls himself a theological conservative and a social justice liberal, announced himself to St. Louis Catholics Wednesday as their new shepherd.

Carlson, whose easy, informal manner signals a marked difference in style from his most recent predecessors, challenged his new flock in his first homily as St. Louis Archbishop.

"In our words and deeds," he said, "day by day, let us stand together and say to the world: we are followers of Jesus Christ."

Carlson, 64, who has been a bishop in three other Midwestern dioceses over the past 25 years, officially took his seat in the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica in a two-and-a-half-hour ceremony that displayed the pomp and pageantry the Roman Catholic church has practiced for centuries.
