San Antonio Catholics bid farewell to Abp. Gomez

More than 1,500 Catholics from across the San Antonio archdiocese gathered Sunday for a farewell Mass for Archbishop José Gomez at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrating his five years here and mourning his departure next week to the nation's largest diocese as its successor in waiting.

They bestowed gifts — relics, artwork and bouquets — and hailed Gomez for his resolve to restore a deeper faith at parishes and Catholic schools, generate new lay and clergy leaders, and establish endowments to stabilize the archdiocese's financial health.

  1. We need more Bishop's like him, people who are not afraid to stand up for the truth.
