Book Review: Those Who Saw Her: Apparitions of Mary (Updated and Revised)

Those Who Saw Her: Apparitions of Mary, by Catherine M. Odell, paperback, 288 pages, Our Sunday Visitor, Updated and Revised Edition, March 19, 2010

Marian apparitions have always intrigued me and have motivated me to spend a considerable amount of time educating myself about them. Prior to reading this book, I thought that it would be a repeat of factual material that I already knew, but presented in a slightly different way. However, that was a totally false assumption on my part.

In Those Who Saw Her: Apparitions of Mary, Catherine Odell shares little known facts and fascinating, new information about each of the fifteen appearances of Mary presented. In this revised edition, she updates the reader on the latest developments and Church statements on the apparitions at: Guadalupe, Laus, France, Rue de Bac, LaSalette, Lourdes, Pontmain, Knock, Fatima, Beuraing, Banneux, Akita, Japan, Kibeho, San Nicholas, and Betania. She also provides a clear and objective account of the alleged apparitions at Medjugorje.

The first three chapters of the book give the reader basic background information on the mindset and the method the local Church utilizes when it examines Marian apparitions, while the remaining fifteen chapters describe the apparitions in detail – the historical events surrounding them, the lives of the visionaries, the message given in each, and the meaning of that message.

Writing in a very descriptive manner, Odell makes you feel as if you are actually there, as a first hand observer, viewing the event for the first time, as it originally took place. Each story captured my attention and was so exciting, that it was difficult to put the book down. Many of the miraculous events were so beautifully detailed that I found myself re-reading chapters.

This is indeed a compelling and comprehensive presentation of the prophetic messages of the Mother of God. Odell’s book will leave a lasting impression on your heart and soul – as you meditate on Mary’s messages of hope, comfort, and spiritual guidance and apply them to your daily life. This is a book I heartily recommend for believers and non-believers alike.
