Vatican launches catechesis phone app on eve of worldwide catechism conference




September 19, 2013. (Romereports.com) The Vatican is once again looking for new ways to spread the new evangelization. It's now preparing to launch a new phone app to help with catechism education, as it prepares to welcome hundreds of participants to the World Day for Catechists.  

As part of the events for the Year of Faith, the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization organized the World Day and the World Congress for Catechists. It'll take place from September 25th to the 29th.

“First of all we need to recognize the role that they play within the Church and the life of the Church. But secondly, I think it's very important for us the challenge that is coming.”

Msgr. Fisichella says catechists are vital to the Church in parts of the world like Latin America and Africa,
where there are not enough priests for every parish.

He especially highlighted the role of women, who usually lead catechism education in churches. Some 1600 people representing 104 dioceses worldwide will meet in Rome. Their goal is to get everyone on the same page when it comes to catechism education. And just in time for the congress, the app, titled “Catechism of the Catholic Church,” will be another tool at their disposal.

“The app is an instrument, an instrument of new language, of the new media. And everything that we can do in order to make known the catechism of the Catholic Church, I think is welcome.”

The app will only be available for download in Italian. But the Vatican hopes to make it accessible in other languages in the future. Users can begin downloading the app for free in days before the start of the congress on September 25th.

The five day event will take place in the churches near the Vatican, divided by language groups. Participants will have the chance to exchange their experiences and learn from others. On Friday, the Pope will lead the catechesis. Then on Sunday, he will celebrate Mass for an expected 100,000 people.

Saint Michael de Sanctis: Patron of Cancer Patients

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. During this apprenticeship, he continued his fervent devotion to the Lord, especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest. Following his ordination, he left for Belgium in order to found a new abbey on his own estate of Brogne.
