November 17, 2013 (Romereports.com) The best way to tell the Pope apart from the crowds during his General Audiences is generally looking for a white habit. But this week, he wasn't the only one wearing an all-white attire at St. Peter's: 50 chefs were waiting behind him, all of them with their uniform and hat.
Those fifty chefs, and the 350 amongst the crowds are part of an international group for Italian cuisine.
“The association is called APIC, that stands for Association of Professional Italian Chefs. We are gathered here today to have an audience with the Holy Father, and my hat signifies the signature of many of us, as a token of appreciation I was going to give it to the Holy Father.”
All these cooks have great amounts of experience. That's why in addition to their white hats, they donned medals.
“The color signifies the years that we have been in the business. You can see many of us have a gold, he is a silver. I have a gold, and my colleague has the platinum. And it means the years that you have been in the business of food, as a chef or otherwise. I've been for 41, way too many.”
In the end, this chef will go back home with his hat. He was unable to approach the Pope for security reasons. But for them, it didn't matter. It was enough to be close to Pope Francis, and to promote their passion for food.
