Pope talks about marriage annulments, as he addresses the Church's highest court

November 8, 2013. ( On Friday, Pope Francis talked about marriage annulments at the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, as he addressed the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, which is the highest court in the Catholic Church and the department that ultimately oversees these type of cases.

“Your task deals with facilitating the works of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal, which is called to adequately respond to faithful who turn towards the justice of the Church, expecting a just verdict.”

As he spoke about marriage annulments, he specifically addressed the different roles of those involved, including people who request the annulment of marriage and those who defend its validity, also known as the 'Defender of the Bond.'

“It is therefore necessary that 'Defenders of the Bond' carry out their role efficiently, so that they may facilitate truth in their final verdict, which should favor the pastoral good of all parties involved.”

During his speech the Pope also explained that justice is a commitment of apostolic life. He added that it's a justice that needs to focus on the Good Shepherd who tries to help the lost and wounded.
