Pro-life Third Party: A Solution to the Presidential Election Dilemma?
The Catholic Knight: There is only one recipe for success of the viable third party in American politics - especially a Pro-Life third party. It would have to be a Centrist party -- either Center Right or Center Left. The reason for this is to insure that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats gain an advantage from the creation of a third party. A new third party would have to draw people from both sides of the Left-Right debate. It would have to siphon off just as many Democrats as Republicans.

Interesting concept, but would it work?
No. Such a third party would only play a spoiler either for the Democrats or the Republicans. You can see this throughout history with Theodore Roosevelt (Bull Moose Party), Ralph Nader, and Ross Perot in Presidential elections past. The best solution is not to create a third party, but convince a majority of people to vote pro-life. That will be what helps pro-lifers keep pro-life candidates on the slate and in office.
ReplyDeleteWork to do what? Elect a president?
ReplyDeleteNo, it wouldn't do that.
Draw equal numbers from the Republicans and the Democrats?
Pro-lifers are a negligible consideration in the Democratic Party (as evidenced by the constant neglect exhibited them by the party); there's no way to get as many voters from the Democrats as from the GOP. That would be like hoping to get as much water from a measuring cup as from a gallon jar.
Siphon off enough pro-life voters that the GOP could become as pro-abortion as the Democrats?
Possibly.
