Priest Donates Kidney to Parishioner
Normal, IL - A priest from Normal donated his left kidney on Monday to a parishioner with kidney failure, saying he wanted “to alleviate potential suffering and stand in solidarity with a sister in Christ.”
Monsignor Eric Powell, pastor of Epiphany Roman Catholic Church in Normal, told The Pantagraph from OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria that the transplant surgery “went remarkably well.”
Dr. Beverly Ketel, transplant surgeon, said “Both the donor and recipient are doing fine.”
Powell, 45, declined to identify the kidney recipient out of respect for her privacy. He said she is a parishioner with kidney failure whose condition had been worsening daily.“
