Continuing To Fight For the Rights of Parents and Their Children

Today, I spent some time praying at the local abortion mill. There were about twenty mothers who came today to have their babies aborted. [I was prepared to do the sidewalk counseling I have been trained for, but no one came in or left during the time I was scheduled there. The holocaust was already in progress.] This was slightly lower in number than usual and I would like to think that my prayers and presence had something to do with it.

However, this struggle is not about me -- it's about being obedient to God's will. God calls each of us to serve him and to love one another as we love ourselves. If I were going through something like traumatic spiritually, physically, and psychologically, I would hope that someone would be praying for me, for my family, for the abortionist and the staff.

Of all the lies and deceptions in this world, I cannot think of one more horrific than abortion. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said that there can be no peace in our world as long as we continue to kill the most helpless and innocent in our society -- our own children.

"I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child - a direct killing of the innocent child - murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love, and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even his life to love us. So the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love - that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts. By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching the people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion. "

~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

What Can We Do?

I would like to share some information about what we can all do to help put an end to the atrocity of abortion and restore peace to our country and to our world.

There is an international group known as the Helpers of God's Precious Infants that helps to put an end to abortion through three different and powerful ministries: (1) prayer groups, (2) sidewalk counselors, and (3) spiritual supporters.

The prayer group comes to the abortion mill for an hour or more on a day that abortions are scheduled and pray for the sidewalk counselors who are working to prevent the physical abortion of the child. The prayer group obtains from God the graces needed to reverse the "spiritual abortion" of the mother. This is necessary for the mother to change her mind about the physical abortion.

The sidewalk counselor is the person who gently approaches the mother going into the abortion mill and asks her to reconsider her decision. The counselor offers the mother a rosary and a pamphlet explaining how the rosary is to be prayed. The counselor also educates the mother on her baby's biological development and helps her understand the exact manner in which the abortion will kill her child. The mother is also warned of the physical harm the abortion may cause her own body. She is provided with literature telling of all the help available -- financial, medical, and spiritual.

The sidewalk counselor may also counsel the father or extended family members who are physically present and are hurting.

Finally, there are some people who would like to be present at the abortion mill, but are physically unable to come. Many are shut-ins or those with terminal or chronic illnesses, who offer their suffering and pain for the purposes and intentions of the Helpers.

Also involved are religious communities, who offer daily prayers and works. Even young school children pray and make small sacrifices, such as giving up one night of watching television.

Who Are the Helpers of God's Precious Infants?

In 1989, Msgr. Philip Reilly founded the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants as an international ministry committed to maintaining a loving and prayerful presence outside of abortion mills where God’s children are put to death.

We PRAY to obtain God’s mercy for the conversion of abortionists and their staff. Our witness outside the death centers tells abortionists and their neighbors that we refuse to accept abortion as a legitimate profession.

Our presence disturbs the consciences of the abortion mill's staff. It should not be pleasant to get up in the morning with the intent to destroy children. They should have to confront God each time they start their day. The message of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants to abortionists and all who help kill God’s children is that though we love them, we will never accept what they do.

We WITNESS to those who pass by, praying that they are inspired to object to the killing in their neighborhoods. Many resign themselves to the fact that the evil is there and cannot be prevented. When they see that something is being done, that it is not necessary to tolerate death camps in their midst, they often join us.

We PLEAD for the lives of the babies. We ask each mother to change her mind. We reach out to her with the love of Christ; we do not judge or condemn her for what she is planning to do. We simply promise support and assistance if she should change her mind, and prayers for healing and conversion if she should proceed with the killing of her child.

Most of all, we LOVE the unborn children who are brought there that day. Through our love, prayers and the efforts of the sidewalk counselors, many mothers are converted and give life to their babies. But for those babies who will die, we offer the only human love they may ever encounter in their short lives.

No one wants to face death alone. Even Jesus, in His agony, asked His apostles to watch with Him in prayer. Our loving presence for the children at the hour of their death comforts the Heart of God because they belong to Him.

"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father's role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts -- a child -- as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters"
And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign." (Mother Theresa -- "Notable and Quotable," Wall Street Journal, 2/25/94, p. A14)
