Vatican welcomes enhanced status for Palestine at the UN, pushes special status for Jerusalem

30 November, 2012 (Romereports.com) The Holy See welcomed favorably the United Nations' vote to upgrade Palestinian status from permanent observer entity to a non-member observer state. The lopsided vote in the world governing body's General Assembly grants Palestine the same recognition as Vatican City.

The Vatican released a statement also voicing its support for a two state solution, and called on Palestinian and Israeli leaders to resume bilateral negotiations to achieve peace and the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

In addition, the statement backed the Vatican's request for a special statute guaranteeing freedom of religion and access for Jerusalem, which both Israel and Palestine claim as capitals of their respective countries.
