Vatican Approved Comic Book on Pope John Paul II

A Vatican-approved comic book which tells the life story of Pope John Paul II will be published in Italy. The 90-page book, published by Piemme, starts with the childhood of Karol Wojtyla in Poland and ends with his death on April 2.

The comic strip is directed especially at young people, and the book draws heavily on John Paul's own words, pulled out of 80,000 pages of speeches and writings during his 26-year pontificate.

The book, which costs 13 euros (about $15.25 USD), focuses on the late pontiff’s childhood in Poland and the sad events and losses of his early life, his experiences in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II, the challenges faced as a priest and bishop under Communist rule, and his life and death as pope.
