The World Eucharistic Congress Gets Underway in Quebec

The Archbishop of Washington DC, Donald Weurl and founder of the Arche community Jean Vanier on Monday addressed participants at the 49th International Eucharistic Congress. The theme of the Congress taking place in Quebec, Canada is “The Eucharist, Gift of God for the Life of the World.” The prefect of the Congregation for divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Francis Arinze told us the Eucharistic Congresses are an excellent occasion to focus on life’s central mystery. Canadian Catholics plead for papal visit

Quebec, Dec. 31, 2007 (CWNews.com) - More than 10,000 Canadians have signed a petition to the Holy See, asking Pope Benedict XVI to attend the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec next year. The Eucharistic Congress will take place in Quebec City next June. Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the host of the gathering and a close associate of Pope Benedict XVI, had lobbied strenuously for a papal visit, and organizers of the event had high hopes that the Pontiff would make the trip. However, the Vatican has not announced any plans for a papal visit to Canada. MORE I'm praying in union with their request. Meeting Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI in person in February, 2006 was one of the major highlights in my life.
