Tens of thousands of pro-life activists endured frigid temperatures and a snow storm Wednesday as they gathered at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to mark the 41st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that has prepared the way for an estimated 56 million abortions. In past years the march has drawn crowds estimated between 400,000 and 650,000 . However, the winter storm that blew through Washington on Tuesday led to cancellations of numerous buses and planes, creating a visible drop in numbers at this year's rally and march. The Philadelphia archdiocese, for instance, canceled all of their buses. Continue reading. Group from Benedictine College to lead March for Life

Image
BY JUDY L. THOMAS The wheels started turning in Kathryn Brown’s head on a long bus ride home from the nation’s capital last year.          Returning to Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., after participating in the annual March for Life, Brown listened as students chatted about how awesome it would be if their group was chosen someday to lead the event. And now, that’s become a reality. On Wednesday, Benedictine students will lead the expected hundreds of thousands of abortion opponents. One-quarter of the student body –– more than 400 students –– set out in eight buses Monday for the 24-hour trek to Washington, D.C. “We have a combination of monks, faculty, alumni and mostly students who are participating,” said Brown, a junior from Lake Winnebago majoring in English who is coordinating the trip for Ravens Respect Life. “We’ll be carrying the banner at the front of over half a million pro-lifers from across the country, which we’re so honored a...

Nine days of prayer part of Roe v. Wade anniversary events for 2014

WASHINGTON (CNS)- For the second year in a row, the U.S. Catholic bishops are sponsoring “Nine Days for Life: Prayer, Penance and Pilgrimage,” planned for Jan. 18-26 this year, as part of several events marking the 41st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion virtually on demand in the U.S. “Since that tragic decision, more than 55 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss - often in silence,” says a posting on the website www.9daysforlife.com . Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston, chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, said Jan. 15 that the number of abortions since the 1973 decision reflects “with heartbreaking magnitude” what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” “Yet our society relegates abortion to a matter of personal choice, often denying the integrity and even the recognition of the personhood of unborn children,” he said in a statement. “However, we have great trust in God’s ...
