Is Jahi McMath alive or dead?

The sad story of Jahi McMath, a 13-year-old girl from California, who went into cardiac arrest after complications from a tonsillectomy last month and was declared brain dead on Dec. 12, has brought  much public attention to the difficult moral, legal and spiritual questions that all families face when a loved one is dying. Here is a timeline of the events that occurred in her case. Father Jonathan Morris weighs in on Jahi McMath case: Here is the opinion of one WV physician. However, another physician challenges this opinion. Dr. Paul Byrne, a prominent Catholic pediatrician, visited the child in the hospital and “observed her responding to her grandmother’s voice and touch with a squirming movement,” according to The Associated Press. “In my opinion, this signifies she is not dead,” Dr. Byrne said. “She should receive treatment as she is alive just like everyone else with severe head injury. If she gets treatment, she will have a chance to recover brain function.”...

Jahi McMath's Mother Cleared to Take Teen From Hospital

Image
Jahi McMath A judge said Friday that the mother of a 13-year-old girl who was declared brain dead after tonsil surgery can remove her daughter from a California hospital if she assumes full responsibility for the consequences. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo said Jahi McMath can be transferred under a deal with Children's Hospital Oakland that will hold Nailah Winkfield accountable for developments that could include Jahi going into cardiac arrest. Terri Schiavo’s family joins fight to prevent starvation of teen declared ‘legally dead’ by hospital

OAKLAND, Calif., January 2, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Terri Schiavo’s family has thrown their weight behind an Oakland family’s effort to save their daughter’s life from doctor-ordered starvation after a routine tonsillectomy left her brain-damaged and unable to breathe on her own. Jahi McMath, 13, was declared “brain dead” by doctors at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital on December 12, after a Dec. 9 procedure went horribly wrong and she suffered cardiac arrest in the recovery room.  Since then, the hospital has been fighting to remove the eighth-grader from all life support, even going so far as to persuade a judge to declare her “legally dead” in the eyes of the state of California, where the law defines death as an absence of brain activity. Jahi’s family has fought back, hiring an attorney, Christopher Dolan, and issuing a cease-and-desist order to the hospital while they try to find a different facility to treat her. NOTRE DAME STUDENT GROUPS DENOUNCE UNIVERSITY’S CHOICE FOR COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

Image
A number of student groups at the University of Notre Dame issued a statement today repudiating the University’s selection of President Barack Obama to deliver its 2009 Commencement Address. The statement criticizes the president’s position on abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and other life issues, and chastises University administration for apparently looking over what they termed "fundamental moral principles." The statement responds to Friday afternoon’s announcement of Obama as the speaker for the University’s 164th Commencement. Citing Catholic teaching on abortion, as well as the US Bishops’ 2004 document "Catholics in Political Life," which deals with issues surrounding a Catholic response to politicians who advocate abortion, the student statement expresses “deepest opposition” to the decision. "This is not a partisan issue; rather, it’s an issue of respect for human life, and our Catholic character. We want to emphasize that we are not attacki...

Video: It's Friday; Sunday's Comin'!

Amidst dark days, like the Obamanation that follows the Elections of 2008, Christians should keep this powerful message in mind that Fr. Frank delivered in the US Senate in Washington DC.

Fr. Richard Neuhaus: Obama and the Bishops

Fr. Neuhaus has written an excellent article on the Bishops and their response to Obama in First Things. He also comments on their meeting in Baltimore this week. What do you think?

Video: McCain Supporter Chides the Press in PA

It isn't often that I post videos from CNN, but this one was good. McCain in Scranton PA: The third question he took was from a well-spoken woman who first thanked McCain for picking Gov. Palin. Then she turned to the rear of the room (where the press are located) and called out shame upon you for your attack of Palin. She followed up this comment by asking where are the 30 investigators into Ayers. I especially like the fact that she stands up for Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, who is pregnant. A wonderful moment! Via The Gateway Pundit.

EUCHARIST DESECRATING MYERS LEADS ATTACKS AGAINST PRO-LIFE PHARMACIST

P.Z. Myers, the infamous Minnesota biology professor who incited national outcry after desecrating the Eucharist and photographing the act for his blog, has now unleashed his venom on a new target - Mike Koelzer, a member of American Life League Associate group Pharmacists for Life International. "Not content with desecrating Catholics' most sacred Sacrament, Myers is once again spewing hate and anger at anyone who would dare proclaim a belief in God or attempt to stop the murder of the preborn," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. Koelzer, owner of Kay Pharmacy in Grand Rapids, Michigan, stopped selling contraceptive products in 2002. He's been featured in The Washington Post and on ABC World News for his views on abortion-causing drugs. Myers' latest screed of religious intolerance on his blog Pharyngula incited an all-out internet attack against Koelzer. Threats and hate mail inundated Koelzer's e-mail after he inadvertently sent Myers a sp...
