Today's Saint: St. Rita of Cascia, Religious, Patron Saint of Desperate Causes

Image
St. Rita was born at Rocca Porena in the Diocese of Spoleto in 1386 to Antonio and Amata Lotti, who were quite advanced in years. Rita’s birth was an answer to their prayers. The family was well-known for their charity, which merited them the surname of "Peacemakers of Jesus Christ". Rita brought much joy to her parents. She was a cheerful, amiable, pious and devout child who spent much of her time in prayer. At the age of twelve, she desired to consecrate herself to God in the religious state. Pious though her parents were, they refused her pleas, but instead gave her away in marriage, at the age of eighteen, to an ill-tempered young man who was the town watchman. The couple had two sons, who inherited their father's temperament. After 18 years of marriage, Rita’s husband was murdered by an old enemy. Her sons swore vengeance on their father’s killers, but through Rita's intercessory prayers, they forgave the offenders. Both of her sons died shortly afterwards. Rita...

Saint of the Day: Blessed Catherine of St. Augustine

"Among the founders of the Church of Canada in its spiritual springtime can be numbered Marie Catherine, this Augustinian whose hand, as well as her heart, was nothing other than charity." ~ Pope John Paul II Catherine of Saint Augustine (1632-1668) was an Augustinian Hospitaller Sister of the Mercy of Jesus who cared for the poor and sick in Quebec. Marie Catherine Simon de Longpré was born May 3, 1632 at Saint-Saveur, France. Following the advice of Saint John Eudes, she entered the Augustinian Hospitaller Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus in 1644. At the age of 16, she volunteered for the community's mission in Quebec, Canada, much to the displeasure of her parents. Her father was so strongly opposed, that he even petitioned the French courts to stop her. But Catherine was adamant in her mission to serve the poor and sick of Quebec. She arrived there in 1648. Her father later experienced a change of heart. On her voyage to Quebec, Catherine contracted the plague. She recov...

The Feast of Divine Mercy and Its Extraordinary Graces

Image
The Feast Day This coming Sunday, March 29, is Divine Mercy Sunday . This feast was instituted by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000, in response to a direct request by the Lord to a Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, whom Pope John Paul II canonized that year . The Image On February 22, 1931, Jesus first appeared to St. Faustina at the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy convent in Plock, Poland. This is how she describes that vision in her diary: “In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw the Lord in a white garment. He had one hand raised in blessing and the other was touching his garment at the chest. From the fold in His garment…..there were two large rays: one red and the other pale.” Jesus later told her: “Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the signature Jesus, I trust in You. I desire this image be venerated first in your chapel and then throughout the world.” The Meaning of the Image There is a connection between that image and the liturgy of the sec...

"In the heart of Jesus whoever is in anguish on account of the crosses of life can find peace; those afflicted by suffering and illness obtain relief; those in the grip of uncertainty and anxiety experience joy, because in Christ's heart are depths of consolation and love for all who turn to Him with confidence. " ~ Pope John Paul II

Pope releases two doves to end the month for peace

Image
Accompanied by two children, Pope Benedict XVI released two small white doves from the window of the Apostolic Palace, to end the “Month for Peace”. At the end of the Angelus, the Pope greeted the children and youth of the Catholic Action Rome, which annually concludes the "Month for Peace" in St. Peter's Square. The Pope addressed the children, " Dear little friends…Follow the path that Jesus has shown us to build true peace!" Pope John Paul II on Peace "The world will never be the dwelling place of peace till peace has found a home in the heart of each and every person, till every person preserves in himself the order ordained by God to be preserved." (Pacem in Terris) The Peace Prayer Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, the truth; Where there is doubt, the faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness,...
