Fatima: The Ninety-Ninth Anniversary of the Miraculous Miracle of the Sun

Image
The Visionaries -- Jacinta, 6, Francisco, 8, and Lucia, 9 By Jean M. Heimann On Sunday in October 13, 1917, at midday, a crowd of approximately 100,000 spectators gathered on a rainy day in a wet, soggy field to witness the miracle that was about to take place. The people had gathered there because three shepherd children had predicted that at high noon Our Lady who had appeared to them several times would perform a great miracle in a field near Fatima, Portugal called Cova da Iria. “Silence, Silence, Our Lady is coming!” Lucia shouted out, over the din of the crowd, as she saw the bright flash of light in the sky over the holm oak tree. Everyone grew quiet; a holy hush came over the crowd as they instantly fell to their knees. It was as if there was an electrically charged current running through the crowd, as they waited in eager anticipation of the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God. Suddenly, she appeared. Our Lady was dressed all in white with brillia...

The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

Image
The feast of Our Lady of  Lourdes, which we celebrate today, February 11 has always had a special place in my heart -- not only because of my French family background and living in a small French village (located in the heart of the USA), but because as a child, I related on a personal level to Bernadette. Like her, I was initially a slow learner in school. My health was poor and I was a little behind my peers in the primary grades because I missed so much school and also because I was nearsighted and needed glasses. (However, it didn't take me long to catch up and even excel in my studies after I got my glasses.) Everyday after school, I visited Bernadette and Our Lady at the Lourdes shrine behind our church and prayed there, often imagining what it would be like to have been St. Bernadette. To this very day, I continue to be fascinated by the simple obedience, humility, and holiness of this great saint. February 11 marks the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 18...

Feast of Our Lady of La Salette

Image
Today, September 19, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of La Salette. On Saturday, September 19, 1846, on the feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows. about three o'clock in the afternoon, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the mountain in La Salette, France to fifteen-year-old Melanie Calvat and eleven-year-old Maximin Giraud, two young shepherds. Mary appeared in a resplendent light as a beautiful woman dressed in a strange costume, seated on a stone, her face buried in her hands, crying. The beautiful lady then stood up and crossed her arms. She told the children not to be afraid but reassured them that she had great news to share. She gave them both a public message and asked them to make her message known to all her people. Our Lady called the townspeople to repent of their sins and to turn back to Christ.  The Blessed Mother told them: "If my people do not wish to submit themselves, I am forced to let go of the hand of my Son. It is so heavy and weighs me ...

67 Years Later, Marian Apparitions Approved

Image
I watched EWTN News tonight and learned of the approval of the apparitions of Mary Mediatrix of all Grace  that I am excited to share this with all of you. In 1948, Our Blessed Mother appeared 19 times to a novice in the Carmelite order in Lipa City, Philippines. Teresita Castillo recounted that Our Lady stressed humility, penance, prayers for the clergy and the Pope, and to pray the Rosary. Our Lady also asked that a Mass be held on the 12th of every month. Before her final departure, the Blessed Virgin identified herself: "I am the Mediatrix of all Grace." Teresita reported that there was one secret for herself, one for the Carmel convent in Lipa City, one for China, and also one for the entire world.Initially declared by a local bishop as non-supernatural in 1951, the case was reopened in 1991 with extensive research then investigation, and was formally approved by Archbishop Ramon Arguelles on September 12, 2015.   Update: Here is a video of the EWTN News...

Our Lady of Knock

Image
Historically August 21 is the feast of Our Lady of Knock, where Our Lady is said to have appeared in Ireland with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist at the church's south gable on a wet and windswept evening in August and was witnessed by 15 people. On August 21, 1879, Margaret Beirne, a resident of Cnoc Mhuire, was sent by her brother to lock up the church for the evening. When she was ready to leave, she noticed a strange brightness hovering over the church. Margaret had other things on her mind, and didn't tell anyone what she saw. Around the same time, another member of the Beirne family, Mary, was leaving from a visit to the church's housekeeper, and stopped with the housekeeper at the gables, where they could see the church. Mary replied: "Oh look at the statues! Why didn't you tell me the priest got new statues for the chapel?" The housekeeper responded that she knew nothing of the priest getting new statues. So, they both went for a close...

Our Lady was dressed all in white with brilliant beams of bright light emanating from her. She rested her luminous white feet upon the small evergreen tree, adorned with flowers and ribbons. Lucia asked: What does Your Grace wish of me? Our Lady answered: I wish to tell you that I want a chapel built here in my honor. I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue to pray the rosary every day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their hom...

On the Feast of Our Lady of La Sallete, A Message of Hope

Image
On Friday, September 19, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of La Salette. On this day, we recall the apparition in which Our Lady appeared to two children in France. On Saturday, September 19, 1846, the feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows at about 3:00 in the afternoon, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the mountain of La Salette in the French Alps to fifteen-year-old Melanie Calvat and eleven-year-old Maximin Giraud, two young shepherds. The Blessed Mother appeared in a resplendent light as a beautiful woman dressed in an unusual costume, seated on a stone, her face buried in her hands, crying. She then stood up and crossed her arms. Around her neck, she wore a chain containing a crucifix with a hammer and pincers on either side. She told the children not to be afraid but reassured them that she had great news to share. She gave them a public message and asked them to make her message known to all her people. In her message, Our Lady called the townspeople to repent of their s...

Third Secret of Fatima Exhibited

Image
The manuscript written by Sr Lucia in 1944 on the "third secret of Fátima" is to be exhibited at an exhibition on "Secrecy and Revelation" which will open in the Portuguese shrine at Fátima on 30 November. Sr Lucia dos Santos was 10 years old in 1917 when the Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to her and to two young cousins, on the 13th of each month, from May to October of that year. The "third secret" was only revealed on 13 May 2000. The manuscript will be on loan from the Vatican. Fátima has since become one of the leading Marian shrines in the world, drawing millions of pilgrims every year, from all over the world, including every pope since Paul VI, who came in 1967. Some interpreted the "third secret" as having foretold the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II, which occurred on 13 May 1981 in St Peter's Square. It mentions the murder of "a bishop dressed in white - we had the impression that it was the Ho...
