Dr. Mary Ann Glendon, the woman who was earlier chosen by the University of Notre Dame to receive the Laetare Medal (the most prestigious award an American Catholic can receive), but turned it down due to the University’s short-comings in Catholicism , has now been honored by a University of Notre Dame student group. From CNA: While Glendon chose not to come to Notre Dame for commencement, she did graciously accept an award from a Notre Dame student group. The Orestes Brownson Council , part of the student coalition "Notre Dame Response" that opposed the University’s decision to invite and honor President Obama, awarded Dr Glendon the Bishop John M. D’Arcy Award for extraordinary witness to the faith and service to the Church on May 17, 2009 at the group’s "Rally on the Quad" event. Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, has been invited by Notre Dame graduates to join them in prayer Sunday as they boycott their own commencement and instead have a prayer vigil for life. Fr. Frank also proposes some other action items. Questions: Will Fr. Frank be jailed, too, or will he be considered a guest of the Notre Dame students? If the Bishop of the diocese participates in this alternate ceremony will he be jailed too, like Alan Keyes? I wonder if other priests, deacons or religious participate in this if they, too, will be imprisoned while the "King of the Culture of Death" receives an award ? Notre Dame response has updated their website with this breaking news: "We have received official permission to hold a prayerful and constructive demonstration on the South Quad of the University of Notre Dame between 11am and 4pm on the day of Commencement. The students of this coalition would like to extend an invitation to all those interested in joining us on campus on May 17th as we respectfully give witness to Notre Dame's Catholic identity and pro-life principles.
