Abortion not only destroys the lives of innocent babies, but it injures their mothers, too. This legal abortion resulted in the death of the mother. Just because an abortion is legal, it does not mean it is safe. According to Dr. Gunta Lazdane , Advisor to the World Health Organization on Reproductive Health and Research, “up to 20 percent of maternal deaths are due to abortion, even in those situations where abortion is legal.”  In addition, there are numerous other physical and emotional complications that accompany an abortion. Abortion never resolves problems, but only makes things worse. The Vatican’s official newspaper has caused a media storm in the European press with an article asserting the abortifacient and carcinogenic effects of hormonal contraceptives. The Italian edition of L’Osservatore Romano carries an article this week on a report by the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations (FIAMC) that was created to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the encyclical Humanae Vitae, the document by Pope Paul VI that reiterated the Catholic Church’s teaching on artificial birth control.
