Holy Father's New Book: A Theological Work About Jesus

Pope Benedict XVI is at work on a new book, according to a report in the Italian daily La Repubblica.

The newspaper story provides few details about the Pope's writing project, except that the book is a theological work about Jesus.

According to La Repubblica, Pope Benedict began working on the book before his election to the papacy in April 2005. He now plans to include some thoughts from his experience as Pontiff, the story says.

A prolific writer with many books to his credit prior to his election, the Holy Father has indicated that he does not plan to publish frequently as Pontiff. The only major written work he has produced since his election is the encyclical Deus Caritas Est.

During his vacation in the Italian Alps last year, Pope Benedict began drafting that first encyclical. Aside from the report in La Repubblica, there have been no reports as to what writing project-- if any-- the Pontiff is tackling during his vacation this year.

Prior to the Pope's vacation, Vatican sources said that the Pontiff was preparing a document on the Eucharist, to summarize and complete the work of the Synod of Bishops, which discussed that topic last October. Publication of that document-- probably in the form of an apostolic exhortation-- is expected in the fall.
