Saint of the Day: Saint Regina, Virgin, Martyr

Regina is a second century saint who was born in Autun, France. She also called Reine and Reyne and is known almost entirely through legend. According to tradition, she was the daughter of Clement Alise, a pagan in Burgundy, and was raised a Christian by a local woman after the death of her mother during childbirth. When her father learned of her Christianity, he threw her out of the house and she was forced to live with the woman who raised her. Regina was for a time a shepherdess.

The local prefect, Olybrius, became enamored with her and demanded her hand in marriage. When she refused, she was arrested as a Christian, tortured, and beheaded.

Patroness: against poverty, poverty, shepherdesses, torture victims

Prayer
Lord, we come before you in recognition of the courage of your humble martyr Regina. May we imitate her faithfulness and love for You as we pray for the courage and strength to follow You, regardless of the cost. We ask this in the holy name of Jesus. Amen.
