U.S. Senate passes bill funding destruction of human life; What next?

Well, they did it! The U.S. Senate passed funding for embryonic stem cell research (S. 5) promoting the destruction of human embryos for federally funded stem cell research. The vote was 63- 34. At the same time, S. 30, a bill to promote alternative ways to pursue stem cell research without harming human embryos, was also approved, 70 to 28.

Here are some of the reactions to that vote:

Richard M. Doerflinger, Deputy Director of the USCCB Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities:With enactment of S. 5, millions of taxpayers would be forced to promote attacks on innocent human life in the name of scientific progress. Americans have not been required to assist in such direct exploitation of vulnerable human life in the past.”

“Many members of Congress remain dazzled by irresponsibly hyped promises of ‘miracle cures’ from the destruction of human embryos, although experts in the field increasingly admit that treatments from this avenue may be decades away. This debate continues to divert attention and resources away from the demonstrated therapeutic promise of morally sound research using adult and cord blood stem cells. Not only embryonic human beings, but suffering patients and their families, are victims of the Senate’s fixation on destructive research.”

President Bush: “Scientists believe that stem cells have the potential for medical breakthroughs in treating debilitating medical diseases and disorders. However, the advancement of science and medicine need not conflict with the ethical imperative to protect every human life. I am a strong supporter of scientific research -- which is why I authorized the first federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells, under careful safeguards, starting in 2001.”

On Senate Bill 30, Bush stated:“I strongly support this bill and I encourage the Congress to pass it and send it to me for my signature, so stem cell science can progress, without ethical and cultural conflict.”

The President has promised to veto S.5 and congress is short of votes to overrride that veto.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., ., a longtime backer of embryonic stem cell research who was a sponsor of S.5 said:
If we can't override the veto, we'll be back and back and back until we do.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa: "I cannot in good conscience support a bill that requires taxpayers to fund the destruction of human life. This is a slippery slope.''

My comments
Sen. Grassley, you're right on target and one of the few congressmen who seem to understand what it means to exercise the use of one's conscience when making life and death decisions. You also seem to have the common sense to know that your constituents and the people of this country don't want you to spend their tax money on something that will not benefit human beings (zero successful results from embryonic stem cell surgery) but will only hurt them. Now how do we get Diane Feinstein to understand that it's human life that we're dealing with here and convince her that it's important to value life and not destroy it through embryonic stem cell research which has had zero success but has had harmful results? How do we make her understand that adult stem cell research is the only safe, ethical, and successful research that offers promise to those who are in need of healing?

Comments

  1. The score is:

Embryonic stem cell research - 0 cures with decades away results (if any)

Adult stem cell & umbilical cord cell research: 72 cures

Plus, experimentation with embryonic stem cell research has been a "wild card" and reads like a horror movie. They have had hair and bone growing out of people's eyes, etc.
