Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Practices, Promises, and Indulgences Plus Novena and Feast Day

July 16th is is the patronal feast of the Carmelites. The Order of Carmelites takes its name from Mount Carmel in Israel, which was the first place dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and where a chapel was erected in her honor before her Assumption into heaven.

July 16th is also the feast of the "Scapular of Mount Carmel" On that day in 1251, pious tradition says, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Simon Stock, General of the Carmelites at Cambridge, England, showed him the scapular and promised supernatural favors and her special protection to his Order and to all persons who would wear her scapular.

To obtain the indulgences and other benefits promised to those who wear the Carmelite scapular, a person must be invested by a priest and must lead a consistent Christian life.

Practices:Wear the Brown scapular after enrollment.Observe chastity according to your state in life.Recite the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or recite the Rosary daily (usual requirements).

Promises/benefits:"...whosoever dies wearing this [the brown scapular] shall not suffer eternal fire." [Blessed Mother's promise to St. Simon]

Sabbatine Privilege: Release from purgatory on the first Saturday after death [revealed by the Blessed Mother to Pope John XXII in 1322].

Partial indulgence granted by Pope Benedict XV to those who devoutly kiss the scapular.

The Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel can be found here.

Today is Day One. Here is today's prayer:

O Beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a pure virgin, assist us in our necessity! O Star of the Sea, help and protect us! Show us that you are our Mother!(pause and mention petitions) Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

~Prayer composed by Saint Simon Stock

  1. Our Lady's Scapular Saved my Son's Life! A few weeks back my son came home and rushed up the stairs of his building when suddenly his foot slipped forward and up into the air. This motion propelled my son backwards down the stairs like a torpedo. He went flying through a thick plate glass window. As he lay on the floor with his head through the window the glass hung above his neck like a guillotine ready to fall. Somehow that glass stayed intact, for he was wearing very close to his neck the scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He was educated by the Carmelites and has always worn the scapular. His brother was there and pulled him to safety. I had just finished saying the chaplet of the Divine Mercy when I got the call that he had been injured. Thanks be to God and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel that he only suffered a few cuts that needed stitching. No brain, head or spinal injuries were sustained. Wear the Scapular!!!!!! Say the Rosary and the Chaplet. These are powerful protectors.

  3. A few years ago I was hospitalized. I REFUSED to remove my scapular. The nurses were forced to work around it...BUT,there were three nurses who had not worn a scapular in years not practiced his/her religion ....thanks to my scapular they bought one at the gift shop and assured me they were going to resume practicing their religion. I have never removed my scapular and have worn out MANY of them. When my mom was hospitilized, I saw to it that she had hers and she died with it on. It is a very precious momento for me.
