"Golden Compass: Agenda Unmasked": Catholic League's Response to Pullman's Ploy

Atheist author Philip Pullman's bestselling novels for children were written specifically to indoctrinate children with atheistic values. Now New Line Cinema is using Pullman's novels to create a controversial new fantasy film, The Golden Compass.

Bill Donohue discussed this topic on The World Over with Raymond Arroyo this past Friday and has also recently posted about it on his website.

Watch a video of the Catholic League's Bill Donohue discussing this issue here.

Here are Donohue's comments:

A film called The Golden Compass opens December 7. It is based on the first book of a trilogy titled His Dark Materials. The author of this children's fantasy is Philip Pullman, a noted English atheist. It is his objective to bash Christianity and promote atheism. To kids. The Golden Compass is a film version of the book by that name, and it is being toned down so that Catholics, as well as Protestants, are not enraged.

The second book of the trilogy, The Subtle Knife, is more overt in its hatred of Christianity than the first book, and the third entry, The Amber Spyglass, is even more blatant. Because The Golden Compass is based on the least offensive of the three books, and because it is being further watered down for the big screen, some might wonder why parents should be wary of the film.

The Catholic League wants Christians to stay away from this movie precisely because it knows that the film is bait for the books: unsuspecting parents who take their children to see the movie may be impelled to buy the three books as a Christmas present. And no parent who wants to bring their children up in the faith will want any part of these books.

The Golden Compass: Agenda Unmasked is the Catholic League's response. It provides information about the film, The Golden Compass, and details what book reviewers have said about Pullman's books; a synopsis of his trilogy is also included.

  4. The money IS for a good cause; the truth, from Pullman himself. His agenda to deceive innocent children, to deprive them of the gift of faith, is revealed in this book, in his own words.
I imagine that the Catholic League is just covering the cost of the book and the campaign to tell the truth about the stealth campaign of the film "The Golden Compass".

  6. I read Leticia's comment and disagree. It is a blatant attempt to make money. If they just put the pamphlet in pdf format and put it on their site there would be no publication costs, no postage and no handling costs and no credit card processing fees. I agree that the info is probably useful and I would read it on the web but $5 for a pamphlet is ridiculous.

  8. I agree that this book is dangerous. I agree that information about it would be helpful (the pamphlet). But I also agree with the fact that this could be put in pdf format and you would inform many more people. It may not be the truth, but the church does at times come across as “please send us a check”. Of coarse this is not the majority, but it is the perception that this gives. In a matter that involves people who may be on the fence on the subject, the 5$ pushes them the wrong way. Just my opinion

  9. So what if they ask you to fund them? Sometimes organizations need that to stay afloat. It costs a lot of money to be able to not only stay afloat, but to be highly publicized and wide reaching as well. I see nothing wrong with them asking for you to FREELY DONATE money so that the people may be educated about the evil behind these books. You don't have to give any money. You can make the choice to buy the book or not; to give or not. Furthermore, the money is going straight toward the purchase of something-copies of a pamphlet. It's difficult to give something like that out for free-you have to consider just how much goes into the production of such a thing. You have to pay-at the very least-the authors, fact checkers, editors, staffers, publishers, and any media outlets used to publicize it. I don't think it's too extreme to ask people to donate a little money to a very worthy organization in this case.

  10. This is so typical - The catholic church attacking a book that children might "interpret" as being against the church - which in the book is an evil entity. Don't forget these same children are hearing on the news that the catholic church can't keep its priests out of its alter boys... hmmm, which is the real threat...

  11. I am not going to pay for this pamphlet. It is as simple as that. I don't pay for movie reviews and I don't pay for sermons (or mass if you are Catholic). I do support my local church and think that this movie may be a negative influence on the minds of the people who watch it. Why not get that news out as a SERVICE and CHARITY to your fellow man who needs to know God? I agree with the other posters who say that charging a fee will turn people away. It already has. By the way there are already some free comments about the books I found here: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=192126

  12. You wonder why people discredit the Catholic church! Well here's why! You are so worried about what people think of you that you are completely missing the point! IT'S JUST A BOOK! WRITTEN BY AN EXCELLENT AUTHOR! So what if there is symbolism? That's what makes for a great novel! You are so worried about your children being manipulated? Come on what 10-14 year old really goes to a movie and comes home and discussing the symbolism and is brain washed to "kill God"? Really just think how rediculous that sounds?!!! You should be more worried about what they hear on t.v. and get off your high horse. I have read all the books and wow would you believe it I'M STILL CATHOLIC! Bet you didn't expect that! How can you sit there and say an author is dangerous.... obviously you have no idea the meaning of dangerous? And just a thought... you are giving Pullman all the FREE PUBLICITY he could every want with all your little rampages! Great example you are setting for the kids parents!
