Senator Brownback To Drop Out of Race - Updated

People close to Senator Sam Brownback say the Kansas Republican will drop out of the 2008 presidential campaign Friday. The long shot conservative contender had trouble raising money to compete in the race. He's expected to announce his withdrawal in Topeka.

Brownback raised about $800,000 in the third quarter of this year, his lowest quarterly amount since entering race. He has brought in more than $4 million overall and is eligible for $2 million in federal matching funds. Brownback -- who is in his second term -- had said in his first Senate campaign he would serve no more than two terms in Senate.

He's widely expected to seek the Kansas governor's office in 2010.

My Comments: This doesn't surprise me. Although I agree with Brownback on many of the issues, there were influential people here in Kansas, his home state, who weren't behind him in his presidential campaign. As can be expected, the left-wing Wichita Eagle consistently wrote disparaging articles about him, poisoning the minds of the public. Long-time solid Republicans and pro-lifers here claimed that he could never win because he just wasn't popular enough to beat Hillary or Obama or whoever the Democratic candidate might be. When I spoke with friends and family from other states about Brownback, they had never heard of him.

While I was very enthusiastic about Senator Brownback initially, as I watched him during the televised debates, I couldn't help but notice that he was about as exciting as uncooked oatmeal. Although he expressed some good ideas, they did not surface in a dynamic way. I think when someone is in a race this competitive, they have to come across as being larger than life: strong, powerful, and confident. I just didn't see him projecting those traits on TV.

I believe that for these reasons, he just didn't get the needed support and funding to compete in this race.

On the other hand, I do see Brownback competing successfully in the gubernatorial race in 20010. Sam is indeed a good man - a very strong pro-life, pro-family Senator - and I pray that whatever he decides to do after this senatorial term, that the Lord will bless him abundantly. Three cheers for Sam!

Update:

Sam Brownback Quits Presidential Race, Says Abortion Advocate Won't Win Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Sam Brownback officially ended his bid for the Republican nomination for president on Friday and he told the media that he is certain a pro-abortion candidate won't capture the party's nod. That's a clear reference to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City. Trailing in both the polls and fundraising, Brownback found himself in a position unable to compete with several better-funded rivals. "Today I'm ending my candidacy. My yellow brick road just came short of the White House this time," he said in a news conference Friday afternoon. "We're out of money." In remarks to the Cybercast News Service on Friday, Brownback said he was confident that a pro-abortion candidate would not represent the GOP in next year's presidential battle. "He is not going to be the nominee," he said of Giuliani. The party is not going to nominate a pro-choice candidate. It is a pro-life party with a pro-choice wing." Asked whether he would support Giuliani should he win the party's nod, Brownback insisted Giuliani would not win the primary. "It is not going to happen...it's just not going to happen," Brownback added. Read the complete story.
