Abortion Pill usage rises despite abortion rate

Though recent reports indicate a drop in the abortion rate, the use of the abortion pill RU-486 is on the rise, the Washington Post reports.

The drug mifepristone, RU-486, has been in the American market since 2000. RU-486-induced abortions have been rising by 22 percent a year and now account for 14 percent of the total. They account for one in five abortions performed by the ninth week of pregnancy.

The pill has helped slow the decline in abortion providers, as more physicians who previously did not perform the procedure discreetly start to prescribe the pill.

My Comments:

Why are "doctors" prescribing this "death pill" to women? RU-486 can be fatal for the woman: 10 times more so than in the case of surgical abortion.

About seven years ago, when RU-486 first came out, I was handing out information flyers to women outside a "Christian" hospital, explaining the dangers of this drug and many were amazed. They had no idea that such a drug existed and were outraged that this "Christian" hospital administered it and that they performed abortions. I encouraged them to write to their congressman and complain about this drug. I also wrote several letters to everyone I could think of and signed petitions.

How many women have already died since taking RU-486? It is difficult to say. Because there is no evidence of foul play, these deaths often go unreported. Since RU-486 was approved on Sept. 28, 2000, the drug has been linked to at least eight women’s deaths and has caused more than 200 women to be hospitalized, 120 blood transfusions and over 1,050 adverse complications.

The FDA compromised the approval process, at the urging of the Clinton administration.

It was done under the "Accelerated Approval of New Drugs for Serious or Life-threatening Illnesses." In order to do this, the FDA had to classify "the termination of an unwanted pregnancy" as "a serious condition." This designation allows the FDA to approve drugs that "could be harmful and ineffective" prematurely.

The FDA has demonstrated a pattern of approving and supporting reproductive drugs used only by women that end up being harmful and sometimes fatal to women. How many more women and infants in the womb have to die from this drug before the FDA pulls this dangerous drug off the market?
