Obama's 57 States

At a campaign event in Beaverton, OR, Obama claimed to have visited 57 U.S. states during the campaign. Stop the ACLU and The Anchoress have some interesting comments to make on their blogs about this. Not only is geography a tough subject for Obama to tackle, but he also struggles with history, as Jack Kelly points out here.

  1. Come on, it's pretty clear that he was joking. The hysterical reaction across the blogosphere of "my goodness, he's dumb/tired/mistaken/confused" is so ridiculous.

  2. Doesn't seem like he was joking. He meant to say 47. One state to go would make 48. Hawaii and Alaska would make 50.

  3. He was thinking about what to say next and instead of saying "47" said "57". And to those trying to make something of this I say, "He who is without any speech-slip cast the first stone."

Obama was a professor at the University of Chicago and head of the Law Review at Harvard. Does the author of this blog seriously believe 1) Obama doesn't know how many states there are or 2) that this blogger is smarter than Obama? If so, please provide objective, verifiable references. What law school did you go to? What articles have you published? What was your class ranking?

  4. William,

You're most likely correct -- it probably was just a slip of the tongue. It's a mistake anyone can make when they're fatigued.

I have no idea whether he really knows how many states there are in the USA. I haven't ever evaluated him in this area -- have you?

As far as his education or the degrees are concerned -- that is not what makes him an intelligent person or a qualified candidate for the office of President of the US.

I have met some people with Ph.D.'s who are very stupid -- I consider Obama to be one who falls in this category. As a former resident of IL, I followed all the senatorial debates and noticed that he makes quite a few slips of the tongue, as you call them.

He is certainly one individual who never learned basic biology as he can't define when life begins and anyone who has taken basic biology knows that life begins at the moment of conception.

  5. The difference is that when "The Golden Boy", Obama makes a statement that there are (at least) 57 states in The Union the media and his supporters say it's a slip of the tounge and blame it on fatigue.

Put the shoe on the other foot for a moment guys... if McCain made the same "slip of the tounge" the media would be less hushed about the gaffaw. Everyone from MSNBC to CNN to Lewis Black and John Stewart would be making jokes from now until election day about McCain's senility. How many jokes could The Daily Show run about an elderly old man (can anyone remember SNL's Reagan "jokes")?

It's so funny to watch liberals get away with offensive jokes at the expense of Catholics (or Christians), Republicans, Gun-toting Pennsylvanians, whites, American servicemen/women, heterosexual, etc. but let's not make observations about the unworthyness of a candidate who might be "pink".

The next time you laugh at political humor consider what the other side is thinking. Too much "humor" today borders on hate-speech with just enough liberal bias to make it "palitable" to the sound-bite masses.

  6. Do people actually believe that a Senator who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard doesn't know how many states there are?

This is just an example of the right-wingers trying to make hay out of a total triviality.

And reinforces the impression that you don't have any VALID criticisms of Senator Obama.

  7. Actually, Obama was probably thinking about the 57 ISLAMIC states that make up the Islamic Conference.

Oh, let's all just keep repeating: He's not a Muslim...
