Planned Parenthood Under Investigation

More than 50 members of Congress have asked the Health and Human Services Secretary to conduct an audit of Planned Parenthood over allegations that the abortion provider has overbilled the federal government.

The request for the audit was initially made by a coalition of faith-based groups, including the American Family Association. Planned Parenthood receives federal funding through the Title X Family Planning Program, a 90-percent Medicaid match for family planning, and a federal program to purchase drugs from manufacturers at a reduced price. Catholic Clergy Call on YouTube to Remove Offensive Videos

The Confraternity of Catholic Clergy requests that YouTube immediately remove all videos depicting the desecration of Catholic hosts (consecrated wafers of bread used in sacred worship). Currently, forty videos are online showing the blasphemous sacrilege against the Most Holy Eucharist (also known as the Blessed Sacrament). We urge YouTube to show the same respect and decency it recently extended to our Jewish brothers and sisters when a similar incident occurred that greatly offended the children of Abraham.

YouTube recently removed a video showing a teenager urinating on the Holocaust memorial in Greece. It was taken down on August 27th, 2008, after five days of protests from Jewish communities around the world. Sadly, the same response has not been extended to Catholic Christians as the offensive videos showing desecration of the Eucharist have been up for more than two months. One of these forty videos shows a host being flushed down the toilet.

Another video shows someone literally absconding from a Catholic Mass with a Host in his possession. The ease with which persons can take Holy Communion since the option to receive in the hand was introduced in the late 20th century, and the subsequent acts of desecration and sacrilege, make it paramount that our bishops seriously consider revoking this method. Restricting reception to Communion on the tongue and disallowing in the Hand is but one possible remedy. Frequent Eucharistic Holy Hours with Benediction will also be of great assistance and encouragement. Voluntary expansion of the Eucharistic fast from one hour to three hours before receiving Holy Communion is another help. Greater reverence for the Blessed Sacrament will be enhanced not only by removing reception in the hand but also by encouraging kneeling as well. Placing the Tabernacle back in the center of our church sanctuaries is another obvious sign of belief in the Real Presence.

We urge all our brother priests and deacons to be very conscious of our public acts of Latria (worship) of the Holy Eucharist as the real, true and substantial Body & Blood, Soul & Divinity of Christ. The attention, reverence and devotion we show to Blessed Sacrament as its ordinary ministers will only inspire our people to aspire to emulate our love for Jesus in this most sublime presence. We also pray for those poor souls who commit these vile acts of sacrilege and ask them to please stop.

Another Abortion Survivor Has Something to Say to Barrack Obama

Yesterday, while I was at Tiller's late - term abortion mill yesterday, I met Brandi Lozier. Here is her story and what she has to say to Barack Obama and others in this short video:

Complaint Asks for Suspension of "Tiller the Killer"

A complaint has been filed with the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts demanding the emergency suspension of the medical licenses of George R. Tiller and Shelley Sella, whose involvement in a late-term abortion last week nearly cost the life of a 23-year old woman.

Allegations include:

Patient S.'s pregnancy was misdiagnosed by Tiller's staff to be 19 weeks, even though according to her last menstrual period and previous medical examinations, she was actually 23 weeks pregnant at the time of the abortion, beyond the legal limit.

Patient S. developed severe pain and other complications after having received a digoxin injection from abortionist Sella that was meant to stop her pre-born baby's heart.

Patient S. spiked a fever of 103.7 degrees, yet was not treated for possible infection by Tiller or his staff.

Patient S. was locked in a room against her will for over 4 hours without treatment for over four hours while feverish and in pain, and was not allowed to communicate with her family.

Tiller threatened to withhold treatment from Patient S., even though she was sick, in pain, and had not yet delivered the baby that was presumed to already be dead.

Tiller threatened to send Patient S. to a hospital in Kansas City, three hours away, in spite of her life-threatening condition and incomplete abortion.

Because of her treatment, Patient S. feared she would be killed while under sedation. During the final abortion procedure, Patient S. stopped breathing and her heart stopped. She was revived.

Tiller refused to call an ambulance and instead personally drove Patient S. to Wesley Medical Center in his private vehicle, further endangering her life.

Tiller was observed to be shaking excessively, an exhibited extremely poor eyesight during the drive to the hospital.

Tiller never provided follow-up care for Patient S.

In addition to the license suspensions, the complaint urges that the Board evaluate Tiller's fitness to continue providing surgical procedures due observations of extremely shaky hands and extremely poor eyesight.

When I was at Tiller's yesterday I heard the whole story about this case and it is just unbelievable that he gets away with this stuff! Let's pray and act to stop this butcher from harming anyone else.

FactCheck.org spews myths about Gianna ad

“FactCheck.org, a supposedly non-partisan organization, has produced an undocumented and misleading article to support its bias against the recent ad by Born AliveTruth.org featuring abortion survivor Gianna Jessen. The ad exposed Barack Obama for his radical opposition to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act as state senator.

“The anti-life bias of Jess Henig’s piece was evident from its title onward. "Born Alive’ Baloney" is based on unsubstantiated claims and half-truths that mislead and misinformed the public.

“For example, Ms. Henig repeated Obama’s contention that he would have voted for born alive legislation if he thought it did not threaten Roe v. Wade while failing to point out the fourth time Obama voted against Illinois’ Born Alive Act it was identical to the federal version that passed unanimously, 98-0, in the U.S. Senate. Even the pro-abortion group NARAL expressed neutrality on that version.

“Furthermore, Ms. Henig interviewed Gianna Jessen’s biographer, Jessica Renshaw, prior to publishing the FactCheck.org fabrication but failed to use any documentation Ms. Renshaw provided to support of all of Jessen’s statements in the ad.

“BornAliveTruth.org demands FactCheck.org to retract Henig’s article immediately in light of the many inaccuracies documented below. It is unprofessional and nonforthright that a supposedly non-partisan organization should propagate this kind of spin as ‘truth.’”

FactCheck.org Myths and Facts On Born Alive Ads:

FactCheck.org Myth #1, quoting FactCheck.org:

“A new ad by an anti-Obama group calling itself BornAliveTruth.org features Gianna Jessen, who says that she was "born 31 years ago after a failed abortion."

BornAliveTruth Fact #1: Gianna didn’t say she was born alive after a failed abortion. She was born alive after a failed saline abortion. See her medical records here. It is fact that Gianna was aborted and fact that she survived her abortion. It is not hearsay, it is not just what Gianna "says" happened or "according to her biographer," as Ms. Henig wrote. Even the sarcastic heading, "'Born Alive' (in quotes) Baloney" in two ways casts doubt: 1) on Gianna's having survived her abortion; and 2) the credibility of BornAliveTruth.org, which provided Henig documentation for each statement made in the ad.

FactCheck.org Myth #2, quoting FactCheck.org:

“In the ad, Jessen says that ‘if Senator Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here.’ She's wrong. Anyone born in Illinois under the same circumstances as Jessen (who was actually born in California) would have been protected under the state's law as it stood, with or without the legislation that Obama opposed.”

BornAliveTruth Fact #2: The ad obviously did not say “If Illinois law had its way…..” Henig totally missed the point. BornAliveTruth’s statement had nothing to do with Illinois law. It focused squarely on Barack Obama’s opposition to the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act, his opposition to considering abortion survivors legal persons, and his opposition to providing them medical care. Did Henig read Obama’s 2001 and 2002 floor speeches from the Born Alive debate? Did she view Obama’s website? Here’s a quick example demonstrating that Barack Obama does not consider abortion survivors like Jessen deserving of legal/medical protection, from his website:

“Language Clearly Threatening Roe: (c) A live child born as a result of an abortion shall be fully recognized as a human person and accorded immediate protection under the law." This is irrefutable evidence of Obama's disregard for the postnatal personhood of abortion survivors.

FactCheck.org Myth #3, quoting FactCheck.org:

“For the record, Obama says he would have supported "born alive" legislation in Illinois if framed in a way that did not pose a threat to abortion rights granted by the Supreme Court in its Roe v. Wade decision.”

BornAliveTruth Fact #3: For the record, this is simply Obama’s spin. Obama voted four times against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. See bills and roll calls here. As for his claim that the legislation in Illinois was framed in a way that posed a threat to abortion rights granted in Roe v. Wade, the legislation dealt with babies who were born alive, living and breathing and completely separated from their mothers. There was no threat whatsoever to Roe. The identical bill in the U.S. Senate (click here to see side by side comparisons) passed unanimously, 98-0, with even the most pro-abortion senators voting for it. The pro-abortion group NARAL even expressed neutrality on the bill. If the federal bill, again identical to the Illinois bill, had threatened Roe in any way, it would not have received such overwhelming support and it would have been sued by abortion supporters as unconstitutional, which has not happened in the six years since its passage.

FactCheck.org Myth #4, quoting FactCheck.org:

“The ad makes use of a rhetorical tactic known as a "‘pathetic appeal,’ meaning it employs pathos, an appeal to people's emotions. Jessen discusses her own history and calls for Obama to recognize her ‘right to live,’ putting an emotional face on a political issue. Calling up strong emotions is often a very effective way of swaying one's audience. But such ads ask the viewer to feel rather than to think. Telling a heart-rending story and telling the whole story aren't always the same thing.”

BornAliveTruth Fact #4: Gianna Jessen is the first known survivor of abortion to be featured in a political ad. She has an incredible story to tell and dismissing her story as a “pathetic appeal” is simply someone’s (pathetic) editorial opinion masquerading as supposedly thoughtful analysis. FactCheck says she didn’t tell the whole story - see facts above to debunk that claim. On Obama’s response ad:

FactCheck.org Myth #5: Failure to check whether Obama’s Born Alive votes were taken out of context, which Obama claimed in his ad.

BornAliveTruth Fact #5: Instead of actually checking and revealing that his votes were misrepresented, Hennig then failed to challenge Obama on his own distortions as he threw the word “infanticide” into his ad, never once mentioned by the BornAliveTruth.org ad, in a sentence taken completely out of context by Born Alive's 2003 senate sponsor.

FactCheck.org Myth #6: As for Sen. Obama's rebuttal ad, Hennig did point out two false statements Obama made in his rebuttal ad: attributing the ad to McCain and claiming McCain opposes abortion in the case or rape and incest. But Henig neglected to mention a third false statement: Obama denying his own voting record. His ad stated, “Accusing Obama of letting infants die? It's a despicable lie. . . Obama's always supported medical care to protect infants.”

BornAliveTruth Fact #6: That Senator Obama voted four different times to not give babies born alive medical care is a matter of public record. FactCheck’s remarkable failure to report that important fact can only be explained as simply carrying Obama spin and doing a disservice to the public.

"His Appearance Beyond Human Likeness"

The above quote is from Isaiah 52:14.

In this mystery, the scourging of Jesus, we find that the Old Testament reveals some of Jesus at the time of the scourging. We also ask Mary to pray for us, not because we cannot pray directly to Jesus, but because we are all part of the Family of Jesus.

St. Jerome, Priest, Doctor of the Church

'Saint Jerome and the Angel' by Simon Vouet, 1625

Today is the feast of St. Jerome, translator of the Bible into its official Latin version (the Vulgate), brilliant scholar, monk, traveller, teacher, letter writer, and consultant to Popes and Bishops, is one of the most important figures in the history of the Church.

St. Jerome was born in Dalmatia (near Aquileia, north of Rome) around 340-342 AD to a wealthy Christian family. At the age of 20, Jerome was sent to study in Rome, where he became fluent in Latin and Greek and developed a love for the classical writers. Here he acquired many worldly ideas, made little effort to control his pleasure-loving instincts, and lost much of the piety that had been instilled in him at home. He travelled throughout western Europe with a friend but that ceased when he had a conversion experience in Trier and decided to become a monk. He joined a community in Aquileia in 370, where he met some who would become his close friends and others his enemies. When the community disbanded, he decided to go east and he lived for years in the the Syrian desert as a hermit. He studied Hebrew, which he hated, but used it as a distraction against sexual temptations. He was ordained a priest in Antioch and at the age of 40 went to Constantinople, where he met and befriended St. Gregory of Nazianzus (one of the four great Greek Doctors of the Church.)

St. Jerome became the secretary of Pope Damasus, who commissioned the Vulgate from him, which took him 30 years to write. His harsh temperament and his biting criticisms of his intellectual opponents made him many enemies in the Church and in Rome and he was forced to leave the city. Jerome went to Bethlehem, established a monastery, and lived the rest of his years in study, prayer, and asceticism. Jerome died at Bethlehem, September 30th, 420. Saint Jerome's remains are interred in the church of Saint Mary Major at Rome and his relics are in the Sistine chapel of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Quotes from St. Jerome:

The measure of our advancement in the spiritual life should be taken from the progress we make in the virtue of mortification; for it should be held as certain that the greater violence we shall do ourselves in mortification, the greater advance we shall make in perfection.

I interpret as I should, following the command of Christ: "Search the Scriptures," and "Seek and you shall find." For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.

Prayer of St. Jerome for Christ's Mercy

O Lord, show Your mercy to me and gladden my heart. I am like the man on the way to Jericho who was overtaken by robbers, wounded and left for dead. O Good Samaritan, come to my aid. I am like the sheep that went astray. O Good Shepherd, seek me out and bring me home in accord with Your will. Let me dwell in Your house all the days of my life and praise You for ever and ever with those who are there.

Tiller Patient Speaks From Her Hospital Bed

Wichita, KS – A life-threatening abortion complication landed a patient of late-term abortionist George R. Tiller in the hospital last Thursday. The woman has come forward to tell of her harrowing, near-death experience at Tiller’s Women’s Health Care Services.

Patient S. has alleged that on Tuesday, September 23, abortionist Shelley Sella may have botched an injection into her abdomen, causing sepsis, a systemic infection that rapidly spreads throughout the body and can cause rapid death.

She also accuses Sella of misdiagnosing her pregnancy at 19 weeks, even though previous medical examinations placed her pregnancy at 23 weeks, beyond the legal limit in Kansas.

On Thursday, while sick, crying, and running a fever of 103.7°, she returned to WHCS where she was isolated in a locked room for four hours, during which time her pleas for release were ignored.

Patient S. was told that she should be quiet because she was upsetting the other women, and was threatened that unless her attitude changed, they would no longer treat her. She was also told that she would have to drive over three hours to a hospital in Kansas City where her abortion would be completed. She refused to make the trip and demanded that Tiller finish the procedure.

Patient S. observed that she continued to feel movements in her womb. Her mother was present during the removal of the baby, and observed Tiller inserting a tube into the baby’s skull and removing the brains, a procedure that is illegal if the baby was still alive.

Before the final procedure, Patient S. said that she feared, “They’re liable to kill me under sedation.” During the procedure, Patient S. suffered an asthma attack and cardiac arrest, but was revived.

Instead of calling an ambulance, Tiller drove Patient S. to Wesley Medical Center in his personal Jeep. She feared for her safety since Tiller apparently could not see very clearly, and was verbally directed though traffic by a female employee who was with them.

She was treated and discharged from the hospital on Saturday, September 27, 2008, even though she was still in pain and feeling sick from her ordeal.

Patient S.’s experience closely resembles that of 19-year old Christin Gilbert, who died from untreated sepsis during a third-trimester abortion at WHCS on January 13, 2005.

“We have repeatedly begged the authorities in Kansas to hold Tiller accountable for the many women he had hurt just over the past few years. How many women must be maimed or killed before Tiller is brought to justice? We say it again: Tiller is a menace and we demand that he be held accountable for his dangerous, if not criminal, actions. This time, the public should not take ‘no’ for an answer,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

Read a complete account of Patient S.’s ordeal.

If this experience was this horrendous for the mom, can you imagine how horrifying it must have been for her baby?

Please pray for an end to abortion and the closing of Tiller's.

Archbishop Burke: Democrats becoming 'party of death'

The Democratic Party in the United States "risks transforming itself definitively into a 'party of death,'" said U.S. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, prefect of the Vatican's highest court.

An interview with the former archbishop of St. Louis was published in the Sept. 27 edition of Avvenire, a daily Catholic newspaper sponsored by the Italian bishops' conference.

The newspaper asked the archbishop, the new head of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature, for his reaction to reports that his Vatican job was designed to get him away from St. Louis.

"I have too much respect for the pope to believe that in order to move someone away from a diocese he would nominate him to a very sensitive dicastery like this one," said the archbishop, whose office is in charge of ensuring that lower church courts correctly administer justice in accordance with canon law.

5 Reasons Why Voting for Obama Is Gravely Immoral

Excellent video which tells the truth about Barack Obama:

Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael: Archangels

The three Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are the only angels named in Sacred Scripture and all three have important roles in the history of salvation.

Michael's name means "who is like God?" Three books of the Bible speak of St. Michael: Daniel, Revelation and the Letter of Jude. In the book of Revelation or the Apocalypse, chapter 12:7-9, we read of a great war that went on in heaven. Michael and his angels battled with Satan. Michael became the champion of loyalty to God. We can ask St. Michael to make us strong in our love for Jesus and in our practice of the Catholic religion.

Gabriel's name means "the power of God." He, too, is mentioned in the book of Daniel. He has become familiar to us because Gabriel is an important person in Luke's Gospel. This archangel announced to Mary that she was to be the mother of our savior. Gabriel announced to Zechariah that he and St. Elizabeth would have a son and call him John. Gabriel is the announcer, the communicator of the Good News. We can ask him to help us be good communicators as he was.

Raphael's name means "God has healed." We read the touching story of Raphael's role in the Bible's book of Tobit. He brought protection and healing to the blind Tobit. At the very end of the journey, when all was completed, Raphael revealed his true identity. He called himself one of the seven who stands before God's throne. We can ask St. Raphael to protect us in our travels, even for short journeys, like going to school. We can also ask him to help when illness strikes us or someone we love.

Prayer to all the Archangels

St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael, be with me today. Protect me from whatever could cause spiritual or physical harm. Help me be faithful to Jesus and a good communicator of his divine love. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Prayer to St. Raphael

Blessed Saint Raphael, Archangel,We beseech thee to help us in all our needs and trials of this life, as thou, through the power of God, didst restore sight and give guidance to young Tobit. We humbly seek thine aid and intercession, that our souls may be healed, our bodies protected from all ills, and that through divine grace we may be made fit to dwell in the eternal Glory of God in heaven. Amen.

Prayer to St. Gabriel

O Blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of divine Mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living. Amen.

You can find more prayers to the Archangels here. The Angelus can be found here.

Legendary Film Star Paul Newman dies

One of my favorite film stars, Paul Newman, died of cancer Friday, at the age of 83. The LA Times has some great photos of Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward (whom he was married to for 50 years) here.

He was born Paul Leonard Newman on the 26th of January, 1925, in Shaker Heights, an affluent suburb of Cleveland. His father, Arthur, was Jewish and ran a profitable sports goods store. His mother, Theresa (nee Fetzer), was Catholic and helped out in the shop, while raising Paul and his brother Arthur (later a producer and production manager). Young Paul was bright and good at sports. He also showed an early interest in theatre, something that Theresa encouraged. He made his acting debut at 7, as the court jester in a school production of Robin Hood.

Paul graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1943. He briefly attended Ohio University at Athens, but was expelled for (allegedly) crashing a keg of beer into the president's car. It was clear that young Newman was possessed of the same bravado and sense of mischief as one of his most famous characters - Lucas Jackson from Cool Hand Luke. For a while, he wandered, at one point selling Collier's Encyclopedias door-to-door.

With the war on, he now tried to enlist in the Naval Air Corps, keen to serve as a pilot. Quickly, though, tests showed that those famous blue eyes were in fact blind to color. Instead of gallantly strafing the foe, Newman had to be content as a radio operator on torpedo bombers in the South Pacific. Read the rest of his bio here.

I liked all of his films but especially enjoyed: Exodus (1960), Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969), Absence of Malice (1981), and The Verdict (1982).

Which is your favorite film? You can find a list of all his films here.

Bella's Eduardo Verastegui on Abortion, Hispanics, and Barack Obama

Listen to Mexican actor Eduardo Verastegui on abortion, hispanics and Barack Obama.

Bella's Eduardo Verastegui's Hard Truth (shorter version - Spanish with English subtitles.)

Eduardo Verastegui - Dura Realidad (Completo)

Warning: Contains Graphic Pictures of an abortion,
which Barack Obama supports

"Abortion is an act of violence that kills babies," says Verastegui. "If you think this is an exaggeration, the next minutes are going to change your opinion."

"Did you know that minority children are being aborted at a rate more than double that of Anglo-Saxon babies? According statistics from 1990, 28 percent of women in the United States belong to minority groups, and according to the Centers of Disease Control, 36 percent of abortions are committed by them.

"Hispanics are the most affected by the abortion industry, and I want to know why. The majority of abortion clinics are located in places filled with Hispanics. Why? Newspapers and magazines, radio and television in Spanish, are saturated with advertisements and announcements promoting abortions. Why?

"Abortion is not only a very lucrative business, but it is also used by racist people as a means of eliminating our people, since they think that we are a menace for democracy in this country."

Verastegui says that the "Hard Truth" video has convinced women to keep their children rather than aborting them.

"Unfortunately the majority of people don't know the truth about abortion and its terrible consequences," he continues. "Did you know that in total more than 3,000 babies are aborted every day in the United States, and that 650 of those babies are of Hispanic origin? That is, more than 200,000 Hispanic babies are aborted every year in this country." (excerpted from Actor Eduardo Verastegui Makes Pro-Life Plea to Hispanic Voters via LifesiteNews.)

St. Vincent de Paul, Servant of the Poor

Journey of Vincent: A recounting of the life of Vincent de Paul, narrated by John Freund, CM.

Spiritual Insights from St. Vincent de Paul

“No matter what others say or do, even if the wicked succeed, do not be troubled: commit everything to God and put your trust in him.”

“Extend mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His mercy from us?”

"But do you know what it is to labor in charity? It is to labor in God, for God is charity, and it is to labor for God purely and entirely; it is to do so in the grace of God."

"Make it a practice to judge persons and things in the most favorable light at all times and under all circumstances."

"We must love our neighbor as being made in the image of God and as an object of His love."

"The most powerful weapon to conquer the devil is humility. For, as he does not know at all how to employ it, neither does he know how to defend himself from it."

"Free your mind from all that troubles you; God will take care of things. You will be unable to make haste in this (choice) without, so to speak, grieving the heart of God, because he sees that you do not honor him sufficiently with holy trust. Trust in him, I beg you, and you will have the fulfillment of what your heart desires."

"It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer.... Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity."

"Perfection consists in one thing alone, which is doing the will of God. For, according to Our Lord's words, it suffices for perfection to deny self, to take up the cross and to follow Him. Now who denies himself and takes up his cross and follows Christ better than he who seeks not to do his own will, but always that of God? Behold, now, how little is needed to become as Saint? Nothing more than to acquire the habit of willing, on every occasion, what God wills."

"He who allows himself to be ruled or guided by the lower and animal part of his nature, deserves to be called a beast rather than a man."

"Whoever wishes to make progress in perfection should use particular diligence in not allowing himself to be led away by his passions, which destroy with one hand the spiritual edifice which is rising by the labors of the other. But to succeed well in this, resistance should be begun while the passions are yet weak; for after they are thoroughly rooted and grown up, there is scarcely any remedy."

"We ought to deal kindly with all, and to manifest those qualities which spring naturally from a heart tender and full of Christian charity; such as affability, love and humility. These virtues serve wonderfully to gain the hearts of men, and to encourage them to embrace things that are more repugnant to nature."

"It ought to be considered a great misfortune, not only for individuals, but also for Houses and Congregations, to have everything in conformity with their wishes; to go on quietly, and to suffer nothing for the love of God. Yes, consider it certain that a person or a Congregation that does not suffer and is applauded by all the world is near a fall."

"Humility and charity are the two master-chords: one, the lowest; the other, the highest; all the others are dependent on them. Therefore it is necessary, above all, to maintain ourselves in these two virtues; for observe well that the preservation of the whole edifice depends on the foundation and the roof. "

The Latest Defective Device in Birth Control

NuvaRing is a newer type of birth control manufactured by Organon Pharmaceuticals, which delivers medication through a ring inserted by the woman once a month to prevent pregnancy.

Nuva Ring birth control is a hormonal contraceptive that prevents pregnancy by releasing low doses of the hormones estrogen and progestin.

Otherwise healthy young women have reported suffering heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other blood clot injuries while on the birth control ring. A growing number of Nuva Ring lawsuits have been filed in federal court and various state courts throughout the country. The cases allege that Organon failed to adequately warn about the risk of blood clots.

Pro-aborts Attack Catholics in Prayer

Watching this, I could hardly believe my eyes! You would think that some of these pro-aborts would be arrested because they are very provocative in their actions -- screaming, spitting, and directly confronting those who are praying peacefully.

Sterilization for the Poor?

State Rep. John LaBruzzo says the government should consider cash incentives for poor people to undergo reproductive sterilization, because society is careening toward a day when persons on public assistance outnumber taxpayers and the economy collapses. A look at Louisiana welfare numbers suggests his fear is unfounded. Figures from the state Department of Social Services show recipients of the main form of welfare, the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program, have plunged from a monthly average of 280,177 people in fiscal 1990-91 to 13,504 people in 2006-07. The monthly grant to a qualifying mother with two children is now $240.

I don't understand this line of thinking -- how would this state representative feel if he himself were poor and someone suggested he be sterilized? People are not animals that you take and have neutered. This is an outrageous attitude! It reminds me of Hitler's way of thinking and what happenned in the Jewish prison camps during World War II.

Saints of the Day: Cosmas and Damien

Nothing is known of the lives of Saints Cosmas and Damien except that they suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of Diocletian. A church erected on the site of their burial place was enlarged by the emperor Justinian. Devotion to the two saints spread rapidly in both East and West. A famous basilica was erected in their honor in Constantinople. Their names were placed in the canon of the Mass, probably in the sixth century.

Legend says that they were twin brothers born in Arabia, who became skilled doctors. Known as the "moneyless" and the "silverless", they never accepted money for their services, but offered them in the spirit of charity. When the persecution under Diocletian broke out, their very prominence rendered them marked objects of persecution. Being apprehended by order of Lysias, governor of Cilicia, they were arrested, tortured, and beheaded in the year 283.

St. Cosmas and St. Damian are patron saints of medicine, doctors and pharmacists. In fine art they are usually depicted in lined robes, hoods or cylindrical physicians’ hats, carrying surgeons’ bags and instruments. They are represented by a box of ointment and medical emblems.

Blessed Herman the Cripple, Monk (1013 - 1054)

Today, September 25, is the feast of Blessed Hermann. Blessed Herman the Cripple was an 11th-century Benedictine monk from southern Germany.

Born deformed with a cleft palate, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida, Herman was cared for from age 7 by the Benedictine monks of the Reichenau abbey of Germany. He was professed as a monk there at age 20. Although he was bedridden and a speech impediment made him nearly impossible to understand, Herman was a genius, who studied and wrote on astronomy, theology, math, history, poetry, Arabic, Greek, and Latin. He also built astonomical equipment and musical instruments and was the most famous religious poet of his day. When he eventually became blind, Herman began writing hymns. His "Salve Regina," or "Hail Holy Queen," is the best known. Blessed Herman died at the age of 40 of causes related to his afflictions in 1054. He was beatified in 1863.

Lesson: Although Blessed Herman suffered much, he always smiled and was the joy of the monastery. He saw each trial as a deeper way to draw closer to God and nearer to His heavenly reward. Let us thank God for each trial He sends our way and view it as a means of purification, drawing us nearer to Him as we consecrate our hearts to His Holy Mother Mary, Our Life, Our Sweetness, and Our Hope.

Unborn Word of the Day has an inspiring post on Blessed Herman, which is entitled:
Another pro-life saint: good! We need Him. Be sure to read it! Here is a poem about Blessed Herman.

Trustworthy Catholic Voting Guides

Many of the bloggers have been linking to Catholic guides for voting, which are useful for those who take the time to read them.

I recently found this article on Catholic Exchange which is an excellent guide. It contains one of my favorite quotes: "Disregard for the poor is a travesty, disregard for human life is an abomination."

Here are a few more trustworthy guides/resources:

Faithful Citizenship website from the USCCB

A Guide to Catholic Teaching and Voting from EWTN

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Moral Principles for Catholic Voters by the Kansas Catholic Conference

The Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics by Catholic Answers Action

Where do the Presidential Candidates Stand on Key Issues? by Priests for Life

Ten Easy Steps to… Voting with a Clear Conscience Fr. Frank Pavone

DOCTRINAL NOTE on some questions regarding The Participation of Catholics in Political Life -- The Vatican

This is by no means an all-inclusive list of resources, but it includes those which I believe are most trustworthy.

Our parish shares information with parishioners on what the Kansas bishops believe (which is consistent with Catholic teachings) so we have never had a problem discerning what the truth is; however, I realize that in some areas this is not the case, which is why I believe it is crucial that the word get out so everyone can know the truth. However, this information is useful to the extent that people are open to knowing the truth and to acting on it.

Let us pray that all will be open to voting and will vote the way the Holy Spirit is leading them through the authority of the Church.

Funniest Video of the Day: The Elder Statesman

Can you imagine what would happen if Sarah Palin had said this? Only Biden can get away with this idiocy! Even our middle school children can identify who was President at that time. As far as TV, he should know the answer to that simply as a result of his own life experiences - he grew up during that era.(when TV became popular.) I sometimes wonder if Biden isn't purposely making these mistakes to bail out of running for VP. Could it be that Hillary will return soon to replace him for VP? In any case, this video is hilarious!

Obama, McCain React to Economic Crisis

Barack Obama who has decided to continue campaigning in the face of a possible failure on the bailout of the banking crisis may be called irresponsible considering the Democratic Congress has accepted money from Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac during a time when Republicans Like John McCain were introducing legislation that could have averted this crisis, others like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank have stood in the way of such legislation while Senator Barack Obama seems to have been holding his tongue on the matter. Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham

by Raven Wenner, Our Lady of Walsingham Church, Houston, Texas

In AD 2000, The Holy Father John Paul II decreed that the feast of Our Lady of Walsingham, mediaeval patroness of England, and in modern times patroness of all English-speaking peoples, is now celebrated on September 24th in England. It is a solemnity for all parishes in any part of the world named for Our Lady under this title.

Our Lady of Walsingham was formerly celebrated on March 25th, "Lady Day" (Feast of the Annunciation), but for ecumenical considerations was moved to September 24th. (September 24 in England had been the feast of Our Lady of Ransom, who was entreated for the re-conversion of England, "Our Lady's Dowery".

The feast of Our Lady of Walsingham was celebrated for the first time on the new date in 2001. The feast of the Annunciation is increasingly celebrated as a pro-life feast, considering children in the womb; Our Lady of Walsingham's feast asks us to contemplate the joy of the Incarnation in the simple family life of the Holy Family at Nazareth. The new date and emphasis on this feast is timely considering how family life is under attack in Western culture. ( Read more at Women for Faith and Family)

Jackie writes about this feast day here. Jay Anderson shares information about Our Lady of Walsingham and his pilgrimage to the shrine in England here.

Senate Passes Brownback's Down Syndrome Bill

The Senate approved a measure that requires doctors to give expectant mothers more comprehensive information if they receive a positive test for Down syndrome.

The bill is the product of an unusual partnership between Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, an anti-abortion Republican, and Sen. Edward Kennedy, an abortion-rights advocate from Massachusetts.

About 90% of women who learn they are carrying a fetus with the genetic disorder have an abortion.

Kennedy is a longtime advocate of disabled and children with special needs.

The bill requires doctors to give parents information about caring for children with disabilities and about support services.

40 Days for Life Begins Today

Forty Days for Life, a community-based pro-life group, kicks off their campaign of prayer, fasting, and presence today. According to the group’s website:

Forty Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of his plan for the end of abortion in America.

The 40-day campaign tracks biblical history, where God used forty-day periods to transform individuals, communities . . . and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ’s resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of his people accepting and meeting a forty-day challenge.

For God’s blessing upon all participating in the fall 2008 40 Days for Life campaign.

Today's Reflection: The Perfect Diamond

Breaking: McCain Halts Campaign to Focus on Financial Crisis

Via WorldNet Daily: In a dramatic move, Republican Sen. John McCain announced he is suspending his presidential campaign to focus on addressing the Wall Street crisis and called on Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama to do the same.

McCain also asked that the debate scheduled for Friday in Oxford, Miss., focused on foreign policy, considered his strong suit, be postponed.

The Arizona senator said he believes the $700 billion bailout bill in Congress will not pass and urged Obama to join him in working out a new deal before Monday.

McCain said lawmakers need to show the kind of patriotism displayed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and "temporarily set politics aside."

"If we do not act, every corner of this country will be impacted," he said. "We cannot allow this to happen."

The Obama campaign, according to Fox News, issued a statement suggesting it actually made the first move to set politics aside to address the country's financial woes.

More to come....

My Comment: This is a bold, dramatic move, but to me, is shows that Mc Cain is using wisdom and prudence. Right now it's more important that he focus on the needs of this country than on his own campaign.

Comming this Weekend...FIREPROOF!

Just a reminder....FIREPROOF is coming this weekend! As FIREPROOF prepares to open in more than 800 theaters nationwide on Friday, September 26, people in the Church are excited about the impact this film could have on marriages.

Catholic Endorsements for FIREPROOF

Dozens of key Catholic leaders are endorsing FIREPROOF and encouraging the Catholic faithful to see it on opening weekend. Opening weekend for FIREPROOF (September 26-28) will determine how long it will play in the theaters where it's opening ... and how many additional theaters it might come to.

"FIREPROOF follows the difficulties of a married couple who have decided to divorce. The movie is infused with evangelical Christianity's sense of marriage as a covenant, and Catholics can share that and complete it with our understanding of marriage as a sacrament. I don't see many movies, but this was one I watched and was moved by."

~Cardinal Francis George, Archdiocese of Chicago

"FIREPROOF is a remarkable film that can be helpful to those preparing for marriage, those in the first years of marriage, and those who are struggling within a marriage. It is artistically well done, it provides remarkable wisdom, and it truly touches the heart. With the divorce rate even among Catholics as high as it is and the obvious struggles that so many people continue to experience within marriage, this is a film that addresses the challenges of life realistically, persuasively, and with humor. I invite you to see it when it opens."

~Archbishop Alfred Hughes, Archdiocese of New Orleans"

FIREPROOF is an excellent film that makes marriage commitment real and attainable with Christ's grace."

~ Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, Archdiocese of Louisville

"FIREPROOF dramatically affirms that a marriage works best when the husband, the wife and God work together for its success."

~Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight, The Knights of Columbus

My Comments: Our diocese is scheduled to see Fireproof this coming Saturday and I'm looking forward to seeing it. It is being promoted here by the Office of Family Life.

Score One for the Good Guys!!!

Via my email today:

Because of the wide-spread attention you gave our ALL Report on Planned Parenthood's DISGUSTING website, the story made its way onto the main-stream media.

You can see our ALL report on it here and here. The resulting bad publicity forced Planned Parenthood to remove ALL of the offensive videos!

This is the New Media in action! When you draw as much attention as you did to the nastiness of Planned Parenthood, the drive-by media can no longer ignore what's going on. Kudos to all of you for making this a big deal, and Glory be to God for His grace, aiding in our struggle. We will be sending out a press release on this soon, which we will forward on to all of you.

'Vote Pro-Life' Radio Ad Begins Running on U.S. Radio Stations

Knights of Columbus spot features beating heart of 10-week-old unborn child

A 30-second radio spot encouraging people to “vote pro-life” in the November elections began running on radio stations around the United States Sept. 23 It will continue to air until the Nov. 4 election.

The ad features the sound of an unborn baby’s heartbeat at 10 weeks, and the voice of a woman saying, “Listening to this makes me wonder – why would anyone question that her life has begun?” It concludes with the words, “Vote your heart. Vote Pro Life.”

“The fact that the child whose heartbeat we hear is alive is simply a matter of science,” Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said in announcing the beginning of the ad campaign.

“We believe that it is vital that America’s pro-life community make it clear that they will reserve their votes for candidates of either party who are committed to protecting life from conception to natural death.”

A similar ad is planned for broadcast in Canada, where general elections are set for October 14, 2008.

Obama: Words are Cheap, but Children Cheaper

~ Via John Francis Borra, SFO Used with permission.

By guest blogger, John Francis Borra, SFO

Barack Obama wants us to believe his words matter. And why not? Other than a brief voting record, he has nothing else to offer. Unfortunately, what figures most prominently in that record is unwavering support for killing our most vulnerable citizens: the unborn, newborn and disabled.

It's a sobering comment on our society that someone as contemptuous of human life as Adolph Hitler, Margaret Sanger or Osama bin Laden may well become the next president of the United States. In a country whose majority claims to be Christian, this contest should not be close; indeed, Barack Obama should not even be in the running. Yet ours is a society lost in a pother of relativism, in which the term Christian is applied as easily to the most appalling of today's passing heretics as it is to the Apostles.

Contrast Obama's objectification of people with Sarah Palin's affirmation of them. Never has there been such stark contrast in American politics. Never. An enabler of the greatest threats to mankind-- abortion, euthanasia, cloning and lethal experimentation-- against a witness to the beauty, joy and sanctity of life. It's not going too far at all to characterize this presidential race in biblical terms. Indeed, Obama's carefully chosen words regarding "reproductive freedom" bring to mind the serpent's lie to Eve; it's the very same promise the abortion industry, euthanasia advocates and promoters of human cloning offer the gullible today: you will be like God.

It's been suggested that Sarah Palin's appearance in this election is providential. How could it not be? Standing before the world, amid a culture that relegates children with Down syndrome quite literally to trash bins, Sarah Palin bears unabashed witness to the love of a mother for a baby she calls perfection. Such respect for the human person should trump all other measures when choosing a chief executive; alas, not in today's America. Foundering in a blood bath of our own making, the choice facing Americans never has been clearer: "change" resulting in even more human carnage or a new respect for life and all its blessings.

St. Pio of Pietrelcina, Priest, Mystic, Stigmatist

St. Pio is one of my favorite saints. Miracles happened everyday of his life. He was a priest, a mystic, and a stigmatist who possessed many rare and mysterious gifts. He was bi-locational, that is, he appeared in two places at one time. He was able to communicate with others through mental telepathy. When he thought of them, they began to smell the scent of violets, which they associated with him. In the Confessional, he was able to tell people their sins in detail, even those which they did not confess to him. Through the simple means of touch, he was able to heal others. God had blessed him with an abundance of gifts that he used wisely to build up the body of Christ and to convert sinners.

Padre Pio was born in the small village of Pietrelcina in southern Italy, the son of a shepherd. His baptized name was Francesco (Francis)Forgione. He joined the Capuchin friars at the age of 16 and was ordained as a priest seven years later. He spent fifty years at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he was very much sought after as a spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor. Throughout his life, he experienced many mysterious health problems, suffering from high fevers and, at one time, was thought to have tuberculosis.

While praying before a crucifix, Padre Pio received the stigmata at the age of 31 and bore the wounds of Christ for fifty years. He was the first priest ever to be so blessed. The doctor who examined Padre Pio was unable to detect any natural cause for the wounds. When Padre Pio died in 1968, the wounds completely disappeared. In fact, there was not even any scaring of the skin, which was completely renewed, fulfilling a prediction that Padre Pio had made 50 years earlier that upon his death the wounds would heal.

Word of Padre Pio spread and after World War II, many traveled to see him both out of curiosity and piety. He was an extremely popular confessor and spent 18 hours a day in the confessional with people who came from all over the world to confess their sins to him. He possessed the gift of reading the hearts the penitents and he knew exactly the right words to say to bring healing, counsel, and encouragement to the sinner and to bring him closer to God.Padre Pio's humility -- manifested through his constant devotion to the Eucharist -- was impressive. He would often remark, "I only want to be a friar who prays."

Padre Pio entered Eternal Life on September 23, 1968 and was canonized on June 16, 2002 by Pope John Paul II. The pilgrimage town of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he lived for nearly all his life, is visited by approximately 8 million people a year.

A Few of My Favorite Padre Pio Quotes

Prayer is the best armor we have, it is the key which opens the heart of God.

Pray, hope and don't worry. Anxiety doesn't help at all. Our Merciful Lord will listen to your prayer.

Don't spend your energies on things that generate worry, anxiety and anguish. Only one thing is necessary: Lift up your spirit, and love God.

Our present life is given only to gain the eternal one and if we don't think about it, we build our affections on what belongs to this world, where our life is transitory. When we have to leave it we are afraid and become agitated. Believe me, to live happily in this pilgrimage; we have to aim at the hope of arriving at our Homeland, where we will stay eternally. Meanwhile we have to believe firmly that God calls us to Himself and follows us along the path towards Him. He will never permit anything to happen to us that is not for our greater good. He knows who we are and He will hold out His paternal hand to us during difficulties, so that nothing prevents us from running to Him swiftly. But to enjoy this grace we must have complete trust in Him.

Prayer is the oxygen of the soul.

You must speak to Jesus also with the heart, besides with the lips; indeed, in certain cases you must speak to Him only with the heart.

Oh, how precious time is! Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Oh, if only all could understand how precious time is, undoubtedly everyone would do his best to spend it in a praiseworthy manner!

The gates of Heaven are open for all creatures. (who repent) Remember Mary Magdalene.

A thousand years of enjoying human glory is not worth even an hour spent sweetly communing with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

My heart feels as if it were being drawn by a superior force each morning just before uniting with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. I have such a thirst and hunger before receiving Him that it's a wonder I don't die of anxiety. I was hardly able to reach the Divine Prisoner in order to celebrate Mass. When Mass ended I remained with Jesus to render Him thanks. My thirst and hunger do not diminish after I have received Him in the Blessed Sacrament, but rather, increase steadily. Oh, how sweet was the conversation I held with Paradise this morning. The Heart of Jesus and my own, if you will pardon my expression, fused. They were no longer two hearts beating but only one. My heart disappeared as if it were a drop in the ocean.

Prayer for the Intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Dear God, You graciously blessed Your servant, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit. You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and death of Your Son. Endowed with the with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls. with reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, I confidently beseech You to grant me the grace of (here state your petition). Amen. Glory be to the Father...(three times).

Video: McCain Supporter Chides the Press in PA

It isn't often that I post videos from CNN, but this one was good.

McCain in Scranton PA: The third question he took was from a well-spoken woman who first thanked McCain for picking Gov. Palin. Then she turned to the rear of the room (where the press are located) and called out shame upon you for your attack of Palin. She followed up this comment by asking where are the 30 investigators into Ayers. I especially like the fact that she stands up for Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, who is pregnant.

A wonderful moment!

The Power of Prayer

God is working in a powerful way in the pro-life movement through our daily prayers and sacrifices for those who are victims of the culture of death.

Just reading Jill Stanek's blog today, I feel so encouraged by the little things that each one of us is doing through our daily efforts which reveal the importance of all of our combined efforts.

In her post BornAliveTruth.org all over the news, she shares: I cannot even keep up with all the articles and news shows reporting on BornAliveTruth.org, Barack Obama's opposition to the IL Born Alive Infants Protection Act, our Gianna ad, and Obama's anti-Gianna ad.

Thank you, Lord, for revealing the truth through your people. So many are deceived by the media bias and often believe the vicious lies that are promoted by the culture of death.

In a second post, Jill posts on Lawsuit helps Google see light. Go read both posts and rejoice with me.

Finally, be sure to stop by and read: Funniest hate mail ever. We have all received ridiculous mail from anti-life bloggers and readers, but this one will give you a good belly laugh! Yes, another one to add to the prayer list. Thanks for the laugh, Lord, for that, too, was an answer to prayer.
