Harry Knox: An Anti-Catholic Bigot who needs to resign now

American Papist Thomas Peters (now at CatholicVoteAction.org) appeared on  Hannity's America on Fox News earlier tonight to discuss Obama’s faith-based adviser Harry Knox and his most recent anti-Catholic comments. Earlier this week, Knox said he stood by a statement he made last year that Pope Benedict XVI is “hurting people in the name of Jesus” because the pope does not support promoting the use of condoms as a means to stop the spread of HIV.

It is obvious to me after watching tonight's program that Harry Knox is an anti-Catholic bigot, which doesn't surprise me in that Barack Obama -- the most anti-Catholic president that we have ever had -- appointed him to the position. It was also not so surprising to learn that Harry Knox is a gay activist,  whom I discovered through my own investigation, was turned down for ordination to the ministry in his own faith because he was a practicing homosexual.

This isn't the first time Knox has made hateful comments about the Catholic Church. Last April, Knox called Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic bishops ‘discredited leaders’ because of their opposition to same-sex marriage. In 2007, he was quoted in a statement from the Human Rights Campaign saying that the Catholic Church had committed an act that was “immoral and insulting  to Jesus” when it denied Communion to a lesbian couple in Wyoming who had promoted same-sex marriage.

In addition to the hateful comments he made about the Pope and his Bishops, Knox has also denounced the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization, as being ‘foot soldiers of a discredited army of oppression’.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R.-Ohio), A Roman Catholic, recognizes that Knox is an “anti-Catholic bigot” and believes that he should resign as a White House adviser.

Dear Mr. President,

The self-proclaimed anti-Catholic bigot you appointed to head up faith-based partnerships has reiterated his deep seeded prejudice against the Pope and the teachings of the Catholic Church, and your failure to remove him from office speaks volumes about how much you really value respect for diversity and religious differences.

We first warned you in a May 2009 letter that Knox’s long and tainted history of bashing the leader of our faith stood in direct opposition to the community he was tasked with building.

But you never responded. You never acknowledged that his appointment to the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships stood in sharp contrast with the Council’s mission to “bring everyone together – from both the secular and faith-based communities.” 

In fact, you never even acknowledged that Knox’s comments were the least bit offensive, even when we gave you the benefit of the doubt that perhaps you were unaware of Knox’s prejudices before appointing him.

Now that Mr. Knox has again offended millions of Catholic Americans – standing behind his brazen assertion that the Pope “is hurting people in the name of Jesus” – we can only interpret your continued silence and complicity with his grave offense as wholehearted support for this bigot and his words of hatred.

We are now forced to demand the firing of Harry Knox. It is the only remaining action you can take to dissuade faithful Catholics that your Council is not a sham and that your “commitment to diversity” is an absolute mockery.

Saint Michael de Sanctis: Patron of Cancer Patients

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest.
