A Catholic actor who won't compromise his morals

It's rare to find a Hollywood actor who won't do sex scenes in movies today, but Catholic actor Neal McDonough is indeed someone who lives out his faith beliefs in his life.

Via Nikki Finke:

Neal McDonough is a marvelous actor who elevates every role he plays, whether it's in Band of Brothers or Desperate Housewives. So when he was suddenly replaced with David James Elliott 3 days into the filming on ABC's new series Scoundrels earlier this week, there had to be a story behind the story. The move was officially explained as a casting change. But, in fact, McDonough was sacked because of his refusal to do some heated love scenes with babelicious star (and Botox pitchwoman) Virginia Madsen. The reason? He's a family man and a Catholic, and he's always made it clear that he won't do sex scenes. And ABC knew that. Because he also didn't get into action with Nicolette Sheridan on the network's Desperate Housewives when he played her psycho husband during Season 5. And he also didn't do love scenes with his on-air girlfriend in his previous series, NBC's Boomtown, or that network's Medical Investigation. "It has cost him jobs, but the man is sticking to his principles," a source explained to me. You can't help but admire McDonough for sticking to his beliefs, even if he's poised to lose as much as $1 million  Read the rest here.

  2. Yep, they even mentioned this on Fox News this morning. They said the actor was a "Christian". While Catholics are indeed Christian, I find it ironic that they didn't mention he was a Catholic Christian. If he was some kind of protestant denomination they probably would have said. My guess--they don't want the Church to look good. I say God Bless you, Neal, and you too, Jean for bringing the story to us.

  3. Jean:

Am I the only one to think that Desperate Housewives is rarely a program that promotes good Christian values? Is this the kind of show that a Christian should be endorsing with their participation or viewing it? The Catholic in me wonders...

It is regrettable what has happened here, but maybe this is an opportunity for Neal to consider using his talent in other venues that lead him and others to the Lord. I think that it is great that he refuses to do sex scenes, but endorsing more family oriented programs in addition to that would be best, even if it is not in prime-time.

    Happy Easter!
