Kansas City Diocese to open cause for sainthood for Sister Marie de Mandat –Grancey


The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph will open a case to determine if a 19th century French nun will become a saint.

Half a world away from a shrine that attracts millions of Christian and Muslim pilgrims each year, a Cause for the Beatification and Canonization for Sainthood will open on Friday, January 21, at 6 p.m., at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in Kansas City, for Sister Marie de Mandat –Grancey, a woman who was instrumental in identifying the House of Mary in Ephesus, Turkey. Sister Marie played a central role in the preservation of Mary’s Home, said to have been the dwelling of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the Apostle John, after the crucifixion. The shrine, on a hillside overlooking Ephesus, is a place of pilgrimage for millions of people each year, both Christians and Muslims.

“We are honored to be designated by the Vatican to undertake this work of studying Sister Marie’s life,” said Bishop Robert Finn of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. “Her holiness was well known in her day, and this process will be a source of inspiration to many.”

Born into French nobility in 1837, Adele Louise Marie de Mandat-Grancey surrendered a life of privilege to enter a religious community. As a Daughter of Charity, she devoted her early ministry to care for the sick and teach orphans in Paris. Under her leadership, the orphanage tripled in size and inspired the necessary donations of food and clothing to care for the children. In 1886, she moved to a medical mission at a hospital in Smyrna, Turkey. There, she joined archaeologists in researching the location of Mary’s Home and rescuing it from oblivion. Contemporary popes – Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI – have honored the Shrine at Ephesus with pilgrimages to the site.

Saint Michael de Sanctis: Patron of Cancer Patients

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. During this apprenticeship, he continued his fervent devotion to the Lord, especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest. Following his ordination, he left for Belgium in order to found a new abbey on his own estate of Brogne. He was its abbot for twenty-two years and during that period was instrumental in introducing St. Benedict's Rule into numerous houses in Flanders, Lorraine and Champagne.He became known for his engaging sweetness of temper, his strict observance of the Rule of St. Benedict and for the replacement of lukewarm religious practice with true piety.
