Thoughts on Paul Ryan
As most of you know by now, Governor Mitt Romney announced on Saturday that he had selected Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate.
If elected, Rep. Ryan will become the first Catholic Republican vice president in history. And he's the first Catholic Republican vice presidential nominee since Barry Goldwater chose New York Rep. William Miller to be his running mate in 1964.
I believe that Congressman Ryan is an excellent choice. He is a committed Catholic who is strongly pro-life with a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee. He voted for a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage. Rep. Ryan has signed the National Organization of Marriage's pledge to defend marriage as a union of a man and a woman and to seek the appointment of judges who will defend marriage. He also supports school choice. Paul Ryan clearly understands the dangers posed by the HHS mandate, and he will fight to ensure that it is eliminated. He has been a vocal opponent of the Department of Health and Human Services mandate requiring most employers, including many Catholic institutions, to provide insurance coverage for sterilization and contraception, including some abortion-causing drugs.
